Roots: Does Anyone Recall This Fact?

I was too young to get into “Roots” when it first aired in the 1970’s, but recently I heard on the radio that the main character, Kirra Kuntey (sp?) was actually sold as a slave in Maryland. Is this mentioned in the movie? How about the book? Anyone know the SD on this, at least per Alex Hailey?
