Thank you for that article. It goes into great detail.
You know, I’m trying to get myself into a mindset where it is okay and acceptable and legal to treat other people as second class citizens simply because of the color of their skin.
I’m unable to do it. I cannot comprehend that there was ever a time that this was considered par for the course, no big deal, just the way it is.
It’s like asking me to contemplate the infinity of the universe. I can’t get my head wrapped around such a concept.
We’ve come a long way. Thanks, Rosa. Rest in peace.
Fascinating article. Any more info on Browder vs Gale, the actual SCOTUS case that outlawed segregation on buses? I thought it would be Parks v City of Montgomery or somthing.
I grew up in Boston when racial prejudice was de facto. I can remember as a child wondering “Why?” It never made any sense to me.
I can honestly say I am the least prejudiced person I know.
Essentially, Rosa Parks belled the cat.
She’ll get the best seat in the house tonight, God bless her.
In this thread, Tacky Headlines to Future Celebrity Deaths I made a bold prediction about Rosa Parks. Well, okay, it wasn’t a prediction, but a quip. Still, it’ll be interesting to see what happens:
Doesn’t even seem tacky, kind of nice in a way.
I read in an interview years and years ago with one of the writers of Seinfeld that they had considered an episode in which Kramer, in one of his selfish modes, makes an old lady move to the back of the bus and it turns out to be Rosa Parks, but they decided against it since it would have gotten headlines but also a lot of hate mail and death threats probably. Still, if Rosa Parks had consented to play herself, it could have been good.
(bolding mine) I remember reading about the assault, but I had no idea the assailant was black. I really, really hope he got his imprisonment rather than rehab. The sad part is this guy knew how much she helped African Americans!
Well, he was a fucking thug. Did you expect him to miraculously change just because he was black and recognised a black icon?
No. He came to rob, and he did. Yeah, I hope he got his time, too.
I remember the incident sparking both “What is wrong with our young black men?” considerations and “See, young black men are bastards who’ll beat up Rosa Parks” reactions. I would be stunned if he didn’t get time, and serve it all.
In one of the strange quirks of history, it was four years ago today that the Henry Ford Museum bought the bus that Rosa refused to stand up on.
IMHO, the biggest lession that we should take from Ms. Parks actions is that one person can make a huge change, without ever having to resort to violence.
And here they are!
Does anybody find it ironic that in all the cartoons St. Peter is white?
Talk about warming your cockles…I liked the second one (or #1 after Main, if you prefer.)
I sat my 8 year old daughter down last night and carefully explained why Rosa Parks was a hero and what used to go on in the country. We spoke for about 15 minutes and I played a little 3 minutes clip that CNN had on her.
I think I was able to get her to understand both what she meant to integration and that 1 person can change the world.
When in fact he should be much the same colour as a modern-day Iraqi, I should think. Probably quite suntanned what with having an outdoor occupation.
And being a shitload closer to the sun than most farmers, even.
Rosa Parks to lie in honor at Capitol

I am curious who the others were.
One was mentioned
