About six weeks ago, I noticed a burning sensation on the underside of my tongue. Two weeks ago, I had a biopsy done on the burning spot and, sure enough, it is cancerous—“squamous cell carcinoma, moderately defined.” In addition to the burning sensation, I was (and still am) experiencing pain and difficulty with swallowing. My oral surgeon has handed me off to an ear, nose, and throat team. He wished me well, said he was sorry to give me bad news and then said he expected the ear, nose and throat guys would perform a throat resection and once cancer of the throat is confirmed, they would most likely suggest radiation treatment. I see the ENT guy for the first time later today and I hate to admit it, but I’m scared. I’ve fought oral cancer to a draw on three other occasions, but I don’t feel optimistic this time around. Maybe I’m just feeling sorry for myself, but I’m asking for some good thoughts. I’ll get back to this after I’ve seen the ENT guy.
