Round-the-Clock Coverage--Who's your favorite talking head?

I have to go with Brian Williams and Peter Jennings too. Ever since the Princess Di crash for some reason I always head for Williams first.

I caught Jennings slipping into “Oots” a few times myself and it sort of makes him more endearing. After one of the little montages about how everyone was pitching in or something they cut back to him and you could tell he was proud and deeply moved.

For some reason my husband keeps switching to Dan Rather who drives me crazy because he makes a “click” sound with his tongue between sentances. I don’t know if he’s using it as a timing device, trying to gather his thoughts, or if he’s wearing ill-fitting dentures, but it’s too distracting to bear.

I don’t know who it was but on one of the clips of the tower collapsing the live (at the time) voice says somberly: “There are no words.” Letting the horror sink in with his silence. Very powerful.

Hi, newbie here. I’ve been trying not to watch too much of the coverage – it gets to me after a while and I need to be away from it. But I have to agree with MadSam. Bill O’Reilly may be many things but he’s never boring.

voguevixen, same here. Ever since Di’s death, I’ve been a real Brian Williams (and MSNBC) fan in general.

I don’t have TV at all right now, so I’m getting my news from the Internet. Been listening to MSNBC Cable Audio, which is nice, but it’s TV without the pictures. I need to see the pictures. They’re not doing the Live Video today like they have been.

I’ve always liked Peter Jennings, though. I watched him this morning (on abcnews.com), doing a special on answering kids’ questions about this whole thing. It was truly outstanding. Jennings deserves some kind of award for that show.

So for the moment, Jennings is in front for me, with Williams a close second.

Williams for me. He’s always been excellent. There’s this one other reporter but I’ve forgotten his name…hes cute, has brown eyes, greying hair, on CBS…He’s great too.

Oh - you mean like the “nobody” Bill O’Reilly, whose book “The O’Reilly Factor” was on the bestseller list for a very long time? Or the Bill O’Reilly who is pulverizing Larry King in the ratings?

And Brit Hume certainly is not a “nobody”. Sean Hannity just got his own nationally syndicated radio show. None of these people sound like “nobodies” to me.

 Shepard Smith has movie star looks. Tony Snow is certainly attractive. True, Bill O’Reilly has to be lit just right, but when he is, he doesn’t look unattractive. Sean Hannity is a cutie. Laurie Deue (sp?) is probably one of the most beautiful women I’ve seen, ever. Linda Vester is very pretty. E.D. Donahay is also a very attractive woman. I’m sure there are others I’ve forgotten.

Besides, why are looks that damned important anyway? You are being facetous, aren’t you? (I hope?)

Well, as you can tell, I watch Fox News. I always have had a soft spot for Tom Brokaw, though, and Brian Williams. And on the local L.A. news, no one can match KTLA’s Hal Fishman, who has been around for, like, forever.. (I have heard tell that he is the inspiration for the newscaster on “The Simpsons”, but I always thought that Jerry Dunphy was.)

As for my favorites on FoxNews - I look forward to “The O’Reilly Factor”, Brit Hume is very good, and Shepard Smith, while sometimes stumbling when reading from a script, is quite good “ad libbing” - when a crisis hits (like it did this week) he really shines. Plus, Smith has a great sense of humor, and great delivery. Tony Snow has a calming, stable attitude I really appreciate. Laurie Deue is quite good.

I don’t have a favorite - they all seem plastic to me - but the one I can’t stand the most is Paula Zahn. God, she’s annoying. I’d rather watch those dumb Verizon commercials over and over than watch her.

Yes. Slightly. I mean…it IS television. Of course, Mort Kondracke and Fred Barnes aren’t Miss America’s but they make for GREAT TV.

Also, Tony Snow is way too partisan for me. First rule of anchors, if you are an anchor (not a commentator such as Hanity), you should not be a guest host for Rush Limbaugh! It looks bad.

The problem with Fox is that the fair and balance motto is only applicable when comparing the network to CNN. It is the balancing force against the more liberal network, not within itself.

Put another way, answer this question: Is CNN more liberal than Fox News is conservative? I’d say Fox News is more conservative. Which is fine. We’ve had to look at liberal news channels for years, but don’t try to tell me it is fair and balanced.

Another vote for Peter Jennings, he is in a class by himself. There really is no one else on the air to compare to him.

They do. They are great. I also like the other contributors that Brit Hume has on his evening news program.

Tony Snow was a guest host for Limbaugh? I knew Hannity was, but Snow? I had no idea.

I have detected a bit of partisanship from Snow, but to be honest, I don’t see him a LOT (like I see Hume and Smith) so it hasn’t been obvious to me. He just seems calm, and level-headed, and I like his overall attitude and aura.

Perhaps true. I don’t watch heaps of other cable news stations, so I’ll take your word for it. I frankly don’t think any news station can say they are “Fair and Balanced”. I don’t think such an animal exists on TV news.

I’m not sure I’d agree that FoxNews is more conservative than CNN. CNN has been pretty slanted, IMO. Not that I watch it a lot these days. But I agree that Fox is tilted to the conservative side, which as you said, is fine. If everyone is OK with CNN’s slant (as I think many people are) then there’s no reason to not be OK with Fox News’ slant as well. Unless, of course, you only think news should be slanted to the left! (Which I suspect some people secretly believe! )

No, there was no emphasis. She just knew exactly what she was about to say, saw the opportunity, and threw it in there for those of us who have good memories. Haig looked like he had just been punched in the gut, and kinda stumbled over his response.

I realize now that I forgot to vote for my favorite anchor. For the first day or so, I was watching CNN, wondering “where’s Greta?”, but when she finally appeared, she was nothing compared to the classic Greta that we all knew and loved from the election. So my vote goes for CNN’s asian woman anchor. What’s her name? She’s been doing a very good job. The guy on the roof outside in NY the first couple of days also was doing a good job, especially under such enormous pressure. And the woman interviewing relatives on the street who almost broke down crying after interviewing someone (and you could tell that it was actually sincere) was one of the most moving pieces of television I’ve seen this whole week.

As much as Haig needs his pomposity deflated regularly, that was still not an appropriate time to do it. There are too many people in the Beltway media who think their job is to “get” people in the government, and that’s a sad example.

Joey Chin? The studio anchor in ATL?

I also like Bill Himmer.

Yep, that’s the one.

I have to say Peter Jennings… but the whole thing really makes me miss Walter Cronkite.

I mainly know Tony Snow from his syndicated column. From that, is it clear that he is incredibly partisan. I couldn’t accept him as an anchorperson. As a commentator, sure, but not as an anchor. I didn’t know that Fox used him as an anchor–it makes me uncomfortable. It would seem to me that Fox is extremely biased if they were willing to have someone like him in the anchor chair.

My vote goes to Peter Jennings. I find him very comforting, and his shows of emotions are really endearing. He never comes across as smug (Brokaw) he never, ever annoys me, and I was incredibly impressed when I watched him all Tuesday afternoon and night, and then woke up on Wednesday morning and saw that he was still on.
Brokaw and Rather both really, really annoy me. I boycotted CBS completely after they showed footage of people jumping out the windows. If ABC or FOX did the same thing, I missed it.

I despise this guy - Dan Abrams. He hangs out on MSNBC and I must change the channel if he’s ever on. He’s just pure evil.

What’s wrong with Dan? He was solid in the Gore/Bush case. He kept interviewing his Dad. Good stuff. He’d have a panel of four people and he’d say thank you to congressman so and so, Mr. Smith, Judge X, and Dad. He was one of the first to realize that Bush had won when the final decision was handed down. What inspired your ire?

I wish I could have seen that.

Another vote for Peter Jennings. He was interviewing someone last night (Sunday) and his eyes welled up. He doesn’t come across as pompous.

I also prefer CNN. I like Mathews on MSNBC so I always watch for him but I get put off by the Fox and MSNBC reliance on taking half the screen up in graphics. They have the huge “LIVE” in the upper left. Then there is the thing on the bottom 20% that has the “Logo of the current event (AMERICA UNDER ATTACK)”, now there is a crawler underneath that with info.

I also hate the woman on MSNBC with the black glasses who tries to be ‘hip’.

O’Reilly has to be the biggest loser - if I never see his face again, it will be too soon.

He brings in stuff totally unrelated so he can make a political point.

Ever notice how often he has to say “I am a completely fair and non-partisan person?” A clue: if you have to say that, you aren’t.
