"Route 66" comes to home video

*Route 66, *one of the coolest shows ever, shot on various locations around the country from 1959-1963 is now available in a boxed set on 24 discs. Read more about the series itself on the IMDB. There were some great guest stars seen before they became famous. And just to see what the country looked like then-- what a treat! I want it.

Here’s a New York Times article (clicking into this may affect your monthly limit if you’re not a paid subscriber).

Before you buy, read theAmazon reviews. There seem to be print quality issues. It’s $80.95 for Prime members.

One of the best theme songs, too. The sound of freedom!

Lizard’s leg and Owlet’s wing

It’s been on MeTV for quite a while. It was a decent show and interesting to see, but not enough to buy the DVDs. I actually thought Naked City was better. It also has lots of “before they were famous” appearances.

That was my favorite episode (well, after the 2 with Zina Bethune :D).

I heard the story on NPR Friday. Route 66 was before my time, and it wasn’t shown in reruns when I was growing up. It’s one of those shows that was hugely popular when it aired, and one which I ‘should’ have watched; but the timing wasn’t right. I like the Zeitgeist as it is portrayed in film and television, and I’m old enough to remember a time when cars were heavy and lacked computers, when there were only three VHF channels available, and there weren’t so many ‘gadgets’ taking up people’s time. I’d probably like the show, but I’m not going to buy the DVDs.

Very tempting! I got up to the final season with George on Netflix, but the last couple of discs never became available. The series works for me as a fantastic time capsule of those years in America and a great collection of guest stars (some used more than once.) Another added attraction is watching Maharis getting into a fistfight in almost every single episode! :stuck_out_tongue:
