Route 66 road trip! Recommendations welcome!

Ozymandias, though it’s on the other side of Amarillo.

I recently caught an episode of that Food Network program, the Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives show, that featured Route 66.

From the show’s web site, these were the places visited. The one in Stroud, Oklahoma, looked particularly tempting in terms of awesome food that is probably hideously bad for you. The one in Kansas was an original Route 66 building, with new owners who have a rather posh spin on diner food. This seems like it would be good if you are even slightly a foodie.

We’re leaving in a couple days, so one final bump…

Sadly, we’ll be doing the Augusta, KS*–Oklahoma City leg on Thanksgiving day, so we won’t be able to visit (they’re closed that day). :frowning: delphica, I’ll see if either of those establishments are open that day…

*Yes, we’re doing a Shawnee/Augusta diversion to meet family, so we’ll be seeing a bit more of Kansas than a typical Route 66 trip would require.

Route 66?

Well, you should be aware that there is construction along Berry Road and also the southern part of Stephen Drive. They’re replacing watermains and rebuilding the road. Understandable; it was in really rough shape. All of the buses, not just the 66D ones, have been diverted down Park Lawn, so if you want to get to the Stonegate plaza, you’ll have to hike in.

What?

Oh, sorry. I thought you meant Bus Route 66.

I just ate at “Lotta Lou’s” diner in Kingman. Loved it! She was just as sweet as can be. The biscuits ‘n’ gravy was pretty good, too. Charges a buck for non-customers to use the bathroom.

Change your SDMB Location to “Radiator Springs”.

Just remember to stop or turn North at some point, or you will drive off the end of the Santa Monica pier, hundreds of miles south of the Bay Area.

Perhaps you can make the trip the next day - I think its about a 30 minute drive from OKC

Yes, they restored the barn, and the soda place is across the road and a little west. My wife and I drove from Chicago to L. A. last May, and wrote a blog about it along the way. (Pop’s was still being built when we went by.)

No, that next day (Friday) is are longest leg–from OKC to Santa Fe. The only way would be to leave extra early, in which case they still wouldn’t be open.

Maybe next time…

Make sure and do the drive between Albuquerque and Gallup during the day. Some really great scenery there.
