I want to make doggie treats at home for my beagles. I looked up a couple on line recipes but they use baby food for flavoring. Good idea but I have none handy. Any easy recipes from dopers would be appreciated.
Best typo evar.
I have some recipes, but they use things you might have to go out for, too. If you don’t want to go buy baby food, you won’t want to go buy liver or yeast. I’m looking for recipes that have common ingredients.
Beagle noise.
Some ask for Bullion .I think I have that.
You will find that almost all contain dry milk powder. Whatever you do, don’t follow any that say to add raisins: grapes and raisins are toxic to dogs.
Here are a couple that have pretty generic ingredients:
Basic Dog Treats
Mix together
3 1/2 cup unbleached flour,
2 cup whole wheat flour,
1 cup cornmeal
1/2 cup skim milk powder
1 tablespoon (or 1 package) dry yeast
3 1/2 cups lukewarm chicken or meat broth
Dissolve the yeast in the lukewarm chicken or meat broth. The richer this broth is, the better your dog will like the biscuits. Let yeast broth mixture set 10 min. Then stir in flour mixture. Roll resulting dough out 1/4" thick. Cut dog biscuit shapes from dough. Brush biscuits with egg wash. Bake on greased cookie sheets at 300* for 45 min. Then turn off oven and leave in overnight to finish hardening. Makes 60 medium-sized biscuits.
Dog Biscuit Recipe II
3 cups water
1 cup safflower oil
4 eggs
6 tbsp. creamy peanut butter
4 tsp. vanilla
3 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup old fashioned oatmeal
1 cup corn meal
Flour
Large bowl
Wooden spoon or wire whisk
Electric mixer
6 cups whole wheat flour
1 1/4 cup vegetable oil
4 tsp. garlic powder
3 beaten eggs
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
2 cups milk
Natural Dog Biscuits
Step1 Mix the water, eggs, oil, peanut butter and vanilla in a large bowl with a wooden spoon or a wire whisk.
Step2 Stir in the whole wheat flour, cornmeal and oatmeal and blend together with an electric mixer.
Step3 Place a small portion of the mixture on a floured board, and sprinkle some flour on top of the dough. Knead the dough until it is pliable, adding more flour as you go.
Step4 Roll the dough until it is approximately 1/2-inch thick and cut into shapes with cookie cutters.
Step5 Repeat steps 3 and 4 with the remaining dough.
Step6 Place the dog biscuits on an ungreased baking sheet and bake them at 400 F for approximately 20 to 25 minutes. (Thicker biscuits will take a bit longer.) Turn off the oven and leave the dog biscuits there for about 20 minutes, or until crispy.
Step7 Store in an airtight container.
I’ve made dog cookies (but I lost the recipe) that used stock cubes/bullion for flavouring and I also added grated cheddar cheese and garlic.

My beagles love pretty much anything I throw in: cheese, cottage cheese, hamburger, leftovers, you name it.
Then again, they’re beagles. They eat cat poop. Don’t stress over the biscuit recipe.
My friend, Al, has a golden retriever that he got as a puppy seven years ago from a breeder about an hour away from his sister’s house. We got the puppy in the late afternoon/early evening, and spent the night with Al’s sister and her two goldens. While watching the new puppy play with an old chew toy, I told him I would make him lots of homemade treats. I told him I was sure someone must have a cookbook for dogs on the market. Al told me to look on the kitchen table. I went and saw a copy of this book . I bought a copy of my own, and have been using it since I made the new dog a cake for his first birthday (Al didn’t want the dog having any homemade treats until he was a year old). The dog has loved everything I’ve made for him so far. Recipes are typically sweetened with honey, and use whole wheat rather than white flour.
How many does that make. ? If they do not like it I am stuck eating a lot of biscuits.
The first recipe, it says it makes 60. The second, that’s a big recipe. I would start with a third of that, myself. I think that is a commercial recipe.
You can substitute regular flour and any type of canned fish in this.
Salmon Bites
Ingredients:
(1) 14.75 oz. can salmon (or mackerel) undrained
2 eggs
1 cup rice flour, split in half (can substitute regular flour)
Preheat oven to 375° F.
Use cooking spray to lightly spray one 8x8 baking dish.
Pour can of salmon into blender or food processor and blend until smooth. Add eggs and blend, then 1/2 cup flour, blend, then last 1/2 cup flour and blend until smooth. Pour into baking dish and smooth mixture into an even layer in the dish.
Bake at 375° for approx. 15 minutes. Salmon will be done when the top darkens slightly and looks set.
Cool and cut into appropriate size for your dog. Store in refrigerator until ready to use.
