Another poster mentioned actively lobbying for a law or policy change. I want to know more and possibly participate. It’s not really on-topic for the thread, so I would start a new one. This triggered a mental warning bell so I went and double checked the board rules. Closest I could find was the No Spam rule.
I’m assuming a GQ “what are organizations lobbying for X?” or IMHO “what are effective ways to change X law/policy?” would both be ok, but I’m checking here first.
A GD “X law/policy should change” might be interesting as well but that’s a separate topic.
For GD or Elections I would have little problem so long as it focuses on the topic and does not become advocacy for any particular cause or such. The rules explicitly disallow such.
Those should be ok, but a lot depends on exactly how the question is phrased. Depending on how the post is worded, it might be interpreted as a call to action, which is prohibited without prior approval. From the Registration Agreement, Rules, and FAQ:
If in GQ, controversial subjects would also require some additional clarifications that only factual responses are intended, and even then you might be best asking in a different forum. For example, asking for a list of organizations lobbying either for or against gun control would likely lead into gun control debate, or a list of organizations for or against particular candidates would likely lead to a discussion better suited to the Elections forum. Similarly, asking for opinions about how to change a more controversial law or policy (immigration, for example) would probably be a hotly debated topic that is more suited to GD than IMHO, and would be difficult if not impossible to keep all responses appropriate for IMHO.
As always, feel free to PM a moderator of the forum in question with an exact copy of what you want to post. The moderator can then give you guidelines about whether or not it can be posted as-is, if some clarification is needed, or if it would be better posted in a different forum.
