Runners and Physios: an ITB question

I’ve been having trouble with my illio-tibial band (caused initially from trying to keep up with a brother-in-law on a set of steep hills, alas): after about 2.5 miles my knee goes bonkers on the lateral side and that’s it for the session, period. So I’ve been taking ibuprofin, stretching it, using a knee warmer, and running less than 2.5 miles, of course. The question: is it pushing my luck to try to do 2 miles TWICE in a day, like once in the morning and once in the evening? Or should I just not do more than 2 miles in a day? Any other tips or suggestions? I want to get more miles in but I certainly can’t do it in one crack–can I space it out over the day, or would that be asking for trouble?
Cheers.

Have you been to a Dr and gotten it looked at first? Knees are wicked tricky, I’d be leery of doing a self-diagnosis so quickly.
