In the article How long will electricity last during the zombie apocalypse the staff explored the idea of how long we would have before we ran out of power in the grid. My question is if you’re running from the zombie onslaught surely having a functional GPS would be useful (head for Alaska zombies have no body head so they’ll freeze like corpsicles). How long do I have to get to Alaska before my GPS stops working. I assume the satellites would last a while but my understanding is ground stations are also very important to the GPS system.
Ground stations refine the signal: You know really well where the ground stations are, and so if the GPS in the ground station says it’s ten feet west of where it’s supposed to be, then you adjust all readings near that ground station ten feet east. The system thus won’t be as accurate without them, but it should be plenty accurate enough to enable you to find the Alcan Highway.
Remember, the system was invented to guide soldiers through hostile territory, and in hostile territory, you wouldn’t have the benefit of any ground stations.
Much as I enjoyed Zombieland, I just didn’t buy that the electricity would still be on that long.
