Running low on bourbon - recommend my next tipple.

Then when you have a few more bucks you can upgrade to Evan Williams Single Barrel.

Four Roses Small Batch is MY daily tipple these days - and Silenus knows his whiskey!

Pappy van winkle is my favorite. Before it blew up and became basically unattainable that was my go to. It’s very good but not worth current prices.

Jack Daniels is just fine.

Not bourbon, you heathen! Technically.

I need to try more TN whiskey. I personally am not fond of regular black label JD, though one of the fancier ones I tried (an orange?) was pretty good, Gentleman Jack is better than the regular but not quite my taste. I don’t know if I’ve had Dickel or the newer ones

Try Jack Daniel’s Sinatra Select. 90 proof and blended from special barrels. Marvelous tipple, and only available for sale at duty-free shops and on-line.

I think Evan Williams 1783 is a really good bourbon for the money. It’s $18 a bottle where I live.

I also want to second Eagle Rare and Blanton’s. Both are very good and not terribly expensive.

Sinatra may have been the one I tried. I looked through the website and nothing else hit my memory. Does it come in a fancy box?

I was just in the local dive bar and some regular who worked for a distributor or something brought in one and said you couldn’t get it easily. He also gave me Green Spot, which isn’t too hard to find but not a cheap one to give to a stranger. Thanks, random guy.

That’s the one. The box itself is worth putting on a shelf as a keepsake for the bar.

Picked up a Larceny today, because I had to also pick up NA beer for someone else and I didn’t want to look like a freak. $20/750 ml looked right. Also saw Forgiven but it was 3x the price.

It’s different. Aftertaste is a little strange but I think I could like it.

I knew that, although the name is new to me. It brings up the question: what alcohol would you need to make a Brooklyn, Bronx, or Staten?

NA beer?

Interesting. I never really noticed a particular aftertaste. But maybe that’s because I drink pretty fast, and the aftertaste is just doused with more sweet, sweet bourbon.

Non Alcoholic.

By the way, the town of Bourbon, MO is not too far from me and has the best water tower ever.

Never mind. Bayard got there first.

Label says it’s a wheat-heavy mash, and looking at the list of similar whiskeys I think I just haven’t had many in that category.

Yeah, it’s sort of like buying condoms or lube, you don’t want to look like you made a special stop just for that. So bourbon it is!

Pretty good suggestions all around and my experience with absinthe was pretty bad (mostly because I drank half a bottle by myself). Some very strange dreams to be had there…
One thing I will mention is my new favourite version of the Old Fashioned. It’s now my default with a slight variation from the link I posted:

THE SMOKED OLD FASHIONED
2.5 oz. Knob Creek single barrel
1/2 oz. agave syrup
2 Dashes DSB wormwood bitters
Slice orange peel
Light a cedar( mesquite, apple wood and hickory work well, too) sliver in the lid of an inverted mason jar ( I have a Jamie Oliver shaker that works great) and extinguish the flame by placing the jar over it, allowing it to fill with smoke. Let it sit for about 15-20 seconds before gently flipping the jar over, try to keep the smoke in the glass and discard the ashes of the wood in the lid. Pour the bourbon into the smoke-rinsed glass jar and swirl for 15-20 seconds to infuse the bourbon. Add a single large ice cube, bitters and syrup to the glass and pour the bourbon in. Gently swirl to mix together and garnish with a orange peel.

A few days ago, I saw a 375 ml bottle of Knob Creek Rye in a liquor store going for $15. Since I never had it before and the price seemed reasonable, I bought it. I haven’t opened the bottle yet so I’m curious what’s the opinion around here about it. Did I make a wise purchase?

Yes you did. Knob Creek Rye is quite nice. Try it in a Manhattan.

Tried JB Devil’s Cut last night. I have to say I quite liked it although it’s a bit rougher than Knob Creek which was on the heel of the bottle. I’d buy it again, especially since it’s about $20/750 ml cheaper than Basil Hayden.

Wife gave me a bottle of it with my birthday present last year. She knew I’d been itching to try it.

Tried it neat, as a shot, on the rocks, with water, and with cola. (Not all in the same night  ). I eventually drank the entire bottle over a course of a month. Gave it a fair trial.

My decision: I don’t like it. Not at all. Regardless of how I consumed it.

All the more for my wife, then.

The bottles I’m itching to get into are the two Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve (120 proof) bottles I picked up from Chicago. Very Limited edition, obviously. Maybe this week…

My father in law served that to me two nights ago. It’s smoother than I had remembered. I had two.
