Running on cold feet hurts ankles

I’m not sure if anyone here has ever experienced this, but it’s a common annoyance for both myself and my boyfriend. If we are cold–physically chilled–and our legs are perhaps a little stiff, our ankles tend to give out (fairly painfully) if we move at any pace beyond a gentle jog. The pain is momentarily severe, lingers for a few minutes, and disappears with no further discomfort.

What gives?

I used to think the world was against me. Now I know better: Some of the smaller countries are neutral.

Your ankles are not warmed up. Shortly before starting your exercise, maybe even before going outside, try the following.

Lift one leg slightly, point the toes downward so they just touch the ground (I balance best doing this with the foot slightly behind my weight-bearing leg). Pivot the foot in circles (3-5 in each direction), then switch legs.

Takes ~ 1 minute, and should cut down on initial discomfort. I would do this regardless of the ambient temperature. This also helps your ankle react to road/track defects, reducing the likelihood of a fall or serious injury.
