Running with dogs

As your runs get longer, he *will * adjust. Our beast used to trot over to the creek, then come back to our side, then chase a squirrel, then come back, then chase a bunny, then come back… Eventually he realized that the runs were frakkin’ LONG and if he got tired, too damn bad, Mr. Let’s Chase a Squirrel! So he fell in line with the rest of the “pack”.

It elped though that he was already trained to heel, so if he was being too big an idiot we could keep his hairy ass next to us.

You might try training him to understand a “run!” command. My Simone is a balky walker, but she’s learned that a direct look into her eyes and the words “Simone, RUN!” mean Daddy is taking off and she’d better keep up with her end of the leash.

But we mostly sprint a few hundred yards at a time, not long runs. Still, you could try it.
