Russell Hoban has died

Author Russell Hoban has died at the age of 86.

I’m not much of a sci-fi reader, but he also wrote some of my all-time favorite children’s books - the Frances series about a precocious badger and her family, and most people are familiar with his classic Emmet Otter’s Jugband Christmas. I imagine he has a lot of fans here on the Dope.

Riddley Walker is an AMAZING book. I didn’t know he also wrote Emmet Otter, which is one of my favorite Christmas shows ever. It took me years to track down a copy.

I heard about this earlier today.

By the by, whatever happened to lissener?

  • 10 on Riddley Walker. An amazing, thoughtful and deep distopian novel. Man, I am so bummed to hear about his passing.

Okay, I had no idea Russell Hoban had written anything other than the Frances books, which I love (maybe more than my daughter does). So I’m x-l-t-a (“sad”) to hear he passed away.

Guess I’ll have to look into Riddley Walker.

I just found out when I saw his obituary in the paper this morning. The only one of his books I’ve read is Riddley Walker, but that is enough of a legacy on its own.

I’ve read the *Frances *books and Riddley Walker, but never made the connection that they were written by the same author.

One of my nieces was enamored with *Bread and Jam for Frances * when they visited for Thanksgiving this year, so it’s been fresh in my mind lately.

Wait - Russell Hoban wrote Emmet Otter? My head asplode. I loved the Muppet version of it.

I thought Riddley Walker tapered off in quality at the end, although there is a lot of genius in it. My personal favorite book of his remains Kleinzeit - there’s just something about it that really appeals to me.

Big fan here. My favourite is Amaryllis Night and Day, but I never read a Hoban book I didn’t like. Sad to hear he died. :frowning:

Emmett Otter? Oh dear God, I’m going to cry…
