Russia: Land of the Tsars-who else is excited?

Is Robert K. Massie living?

I’m a music dork. That said:

Why did they use Wagner’s “Sigfried’s Immulation” to represent Napeleon? Did Beethoven’s people ask too much for clips from “Erocia?”

Overall the music was better. They didn’t use the same variation on the promenade over and over this time and they ended with “The Great Gate of Kiev.” Obvious, but it works.

I’m so happy they covered the Crimean War. My history text devoted two pages to it and left the cause very murky (something about Russia wanting to defend the Orthodox population from the Ottomans).

Eve, good show!

Well, I got worn out about an hour in tonight, but it was pretty good til I wimped out.

Part II was pretty strong. Better visuals, and the historical analysis was as strong as the first night. Good stuff.

Sorry to say I missed Part II—it was between the Czars on The History Channel, and Marlene Dietrich and Connie Bennett on TCM . . . Guess who won . . .

That must have been an uncomfortable place to fall asleep.

Maybe I’m just prejudiced or whatever, but all those Russians looked alike to me. Especially the guards on horseback riding to and from the woods…

I got all the questions right on the trivia quiz! Yes!

Another observation on the repeated use of footage: at least we learned the reason for the failure of all of the revolutionaries before those that finally forced Nicholas II to abdicate. Apparently, it was because they only had one set of wine glasses, and they kept filling them, and filling them, and filling them.
