Ryder Cup 2025

After Bryson’s 3 putt from 12 feet and Scottie leaving a chip in the rough, I think we can get the fat lady to start warming up now.

I live 10 miles from Bethpage. For the past 2 days there have been loads of helicopters flying overhead, according to our neighbors headed back and forth from Manhattan.

It’s a purple area, with growing diversity, but long a Republican bastion. Our previous county executive was a Democrat, but a Republican took over in 2021. (Factoid: he’s Bruce Blakeman, ex husband of Nancy Shevell, Paul McCartney’s wife). There’s an anti-Democrat backlash (I’ve had young guys scream “you f***ing liberal!” at my car on seeing my bumper stickers) and a resurgence of MAGA hats and flags. I often walk or bike in a park next to a golf course and lots of the cars parked there have Trump stickers.

And as for rudeness, Trump grew up on the outer fringes of Queens a few miles from Long Island, and his brash entitled behavior is sadly typical of a lot of people around here. Many of them have parents and grandparents who moved out here from Brooklyn in the 40s and 50s, and they brought their sharp city elbows with them. I didn’t grow up here but my husband did, and when I mentioned rude fans at Bethpage, he laughed cynically and said “What else can you expect from Long Island?” Yes, this is the habitat of the Ugly American, the stereotypical rude New Yorker.

Just saw Lowery win it. How did that American leave his short?!

Correction - to RETAIN it. (Still hope they get another 1/2 point to win it. A full point would be even better to forestall some of the expected griping.)

15-13 in the end. 8 1/2 points taken, but 10 were needed. Way more nerve wracking than was anticipated.

While I’ll give props to the US team for their near-comeback, the fact remains that the younger American (half) generation has simply not stepped up yet at all. Collin Morikawa will remain the youngest major titlist (for everybody of all nationalities and for all past years) for the 6th year going into next year-he’ll turn 29 2 months before the Masters. Only once has there ever been no 20-somethings with any majors, in 2006, with the youngest being Geoff Ogilvy age 30.

Perusing the lists of PGA tournament winners, the only people to have won who are younger than he is all appear to be journeymen, whose sole wins are typically only their 1st-3rd top tens of the entire year. The only 20-something guy who appears to have any sort of potential is 26 year old Chris Gotterup, who has 2 wins total and 1 top ten in a major (the last one played, 3rd @ The Open at Portrush).

This rivals the fallow period of birth years 1958-1969, with only 2 multiple US major winners in Lee Janzen and John Daly, whose 2 wins each represent a significant proportion of all the times they ever contended in a major.

While no 20-something Europeans have won any majors yet either, Ludvig Åberg and the Danish twins Nicolai and Rasmus Højgaard, all of whom have multiple wins on the US/Euro tours, appear to have the brightest futures. I am not aware of any LIV guys however.

Former golf fan who sometimes got pretty passionate about the sport on this board. I refuse to be party to another second of it (and that includes LIV) until whoever has any power takes strong measures to condemn and punish this absolutely vile, sickening, horrifying behavior (and crack down on all this “geddindahoh” nonsense, although that’s obviously secondary now). I do not accept flipping soccer hooligans as a standard for anything.

I’m just sick to death of this. All this obnoxious, disruptive behavior with zero consequences. Where are the condemnations? Where are the suspensions? Has anyone on the European side even propose a boycott?

Chants. There were chants. :rage:

And just so we’re clear, I don’t brook false dichotomies, but if the choice is between perfect straitlaced decorum and screaming anarchy, give me the former every time. And I like to think that would be an easy choice for most of us.

Hey, you elected the commander-in-cheat as your leader.
Don’t expect your youths to be able to hit a ball when there’s an audience and a ref. That is not the american way:)

Knowing you guys you’ll just change the size of the balls dumb down the rules, call it “Real Golf”" and play the “world series“ amongst yourself. And good riddance.

I guess the griping cannot be forestalled.

I would say that the envelope rule subtracts from the drama and the spirit of the competition. Why not just allow substitutions from the ranks of the vice-captains?

The Vice’s are always going to be active players from the respective tours, or Champion tours.

You can argue this in good faith, BEFORE the event. Timing is everything. Keegan now looks like an asshole.

It’s just a rule. Pretty much any sports rule could be debated, and can be made to appear abitrary. Not sure there is any one BEST rule in this instance.

But, yeah, Keegan comes off poorly. Will have to see if Trump invites this bunch of losers to the White House. And if invited, whether they attend.

I can only imagine how Rory feels about having been the loyal flagbearer for the PGA these past years instead of bolting to LIV for an easy couple hundred $mill. He has been such a positive representative for the sport. Sure, he’s had some family issues, but that is not unique among pro athletes. To have the fans act so poorly towards someone who has always conducted himself so decently AFAIK.
