The tl;dr is that there simply aren’t that many good 2nd tier American pros right now, esp. anybody younger than Scottie. X was injured this year and Bryson, while he contended in 2 majors didn’t win any. Any young guns right now are European (tho they also haven’t won any majors yet). The most disappointing has to be Collin Morikawa, who hasn’t had a top ten in 6 straight majors now. Brooks Koepka for whatever reason(s) has hit the downside of his career and has 12 straight no-shows in majors since his last win in 2023.
The next great American hope likely is Mason Howell, the 18 year old winner of the US Amateur this year (who, amazingly, still has no Wikipedia page).
The US consistently disappoints in the Ryder Cup. They really lost my interest when they whined about not being paid, and objected to visiting a Dem president in the White House. Add in the boorish boosterism, and I never pay attn to this event.
Good luck trying to get any traction w/ a golf-related thread around here.
If you got unedited coverage, what the hell happened between him and Rose? I know at least two of the caddy’s got involved as did Euro Vice-Captain Molinari?
I might be wrong, but ISTR it was at Beth Page a few years back that the fans proved themselves to be exceptionally - some might say boisterous, I’d say ugly Americans. Ugly fans and under performing divas do not make for a good combination in my mind.
The caddy for one of the Americans got in the line of Rose as he was lining up his putt. Rose told him to bugger off (my characterization, don’t know the exact words used, but Rose says he could have been more polite). Don’t have the American’s version as they declined to speak to the media.
What happened after that is on the video. Bryson seems to hurry up to the Europeans as they are proceeding to the next tee and say something to Rose that Molinari took exception to.
I think the video is identical. It’s the commentary and graphics that is different.
This must be extremely gratifying for Rose. He just absorbed the abuse all day and delivered again and again. He was extremely calm.
Yeah, based on what I could see Rory and Shane caught it the worst.
The US really needs to have marshals in the crowd and start tossing people (with no refund, no readmittance, and no future tickets). Fuck those guys. Maybe we should start hosting our Ryder Cups in Canada.
And if I were the PGA of America, I would be seriously looking at our Ryder Cup program. What we’re doing is NOT working.
From watching the video some more it looks like a caddie on the US team bumped Molinari twice. Once seemingly to prevent him from catching up to the players and once when he was talking to the Europeans players.
Utterly shameful. I place this squarely at the feet of the individuals running the tournament, as the Golf Digest article constantly indicates staff and law enforcement officers either completely ignoring the taunting in question or even actively joining in it.
I haven’t been watching it but have read the reports and seen a 3 minute clip of McIlroy being abused while trying to take a putt. Afraid to say (as a a Brit), US golf ‘fans’ just living down to all the stereotypes, badly. Hope this is allowed as a comment, being as this is in the Game Room: it just seems like Trump’s America in microcosm to be honest.
I aim at not crossing forum lines, but given current non-sporting events, it should be no surprise that a number of Americans are truly ugly. Funny that I find myself hoping the Europeans really spank us. And after, perhaps say they aren’t interested in continuing this series against such a classless opponent.
Hey - lookit this! A golf thread hits double figures!
I know a lot of people in that part of Long Island (a long time client of mine was headquartered there, so for a couple of years I was in Bethpage three days every other week). I drove past the golf course twice a day.
The area is quite diverse. Significantly Hispanic and Asian communities (including a sizeable and prominent Indo-Caribbean population).
This week they’ve been overrun with folks in red hats. People have been staying home, and not just because of the traffic.
I kinda have conflicting thoughts. On the one hand, I wonder why golfers feel they need church-like quiet while they play. OTOH, I never understand why the folk who run tourneys fail to eject the {It’s in the hole!” morons.
But this kinda thing just typifies the idea of ugly Americans. Not sure how it differs. from - say - soccer hooliganism. But it further lessens my interest in pro sports. Myself, I’d rather play sports than watch them.
Golf used to have sancrosanct unwritten rules about this sort of thing-the worst you used to get was some bozo yelling “Mashed Potatoes!” or some such after a pro drives.
No longer. Good news is that Rory is likely to get a minute long standing ovation when he tees off at Augusta next spring-Masters fans have far too much class to boo him. [Note he tees off in 10 minutes, and NBC has a heart rate ray they can aim at them…]
Meanhoo, re: Viktor Hovland’s injury (he couldn’t even move his neck at all this morning they say)–isn’t this where an alternate could step in? Yeah, otherwise the player in question would be reduced to being a cheerleader all weekend, but that would be preferable to simply calling it a draw, right?
If the noise was constant, like in a football game, the golfers would get used to it and tune it out. But when it’s quiet, a sudden shout can break their concentration. Other sports also have the expectation of quiet at times, like during a tennis point.
