Sacagawea Dollar Coin

Read up some more and Susan B. She was one tough lady. Sacagawea was in her own way, but Susan would cheat. It’s like pitting Batman against Captain America - no matter what, Batman will almost always win because he is willing to do almost anything to win.

I have ten Sackies in my possesion right now, and they sure do get dull quickly! I have a few that are still bright and shiny, but they are ugly when they are worn and dull :frowning:

When did they release the first Sackies? Last November or December? And what are they made of? I like 'em shiny but don’t care for them dull. Am I shallow or what?

Sackies were released last February, I think. out here, Wal-Mart was the first to get them. I haven’t received any as change, as most people seem to be hoarding them. The only place I get them are from the stamp machine.

Yeah, sackies look nice when they’re new; but I also kinda dig 'em when they’re tarnished. I means they’ve been around.

Don’t stash sackies. Circulate them!!!

I only see 'em shiny. That’s the way they come out of the subway-fare machine.

Which means that after EIGHT MONTHS OF CIRCULATION, I have yet to receive one of these boogers as change.

And I’m not giving them to the sort of people who would hoard them…I’m using them daily to purchase newspapers and bagels and cigarettes and other commonplaces. I find it hard to imagine stolid New York City small-time merchants gloating in their back rooms over stacks of Sackies.

Were any of them 1999 Suzies? Every Suzie I’ve ever gotten in change has been from 1979.

I spent the Suzies rather quickly ($7 in Suzies preceded my $7 lunch, funny how that works), but a quick check of the dates seemed to show them all from ca. 1978-1980. Didn’t they stop making Suzies in the 1980s?

The US Mint stuck SAC dollars the last half of 1999. We sell them to the public for $1.25 in uncirculated conditon. They are dated 1999. They bear both the Philadelphia and Denver mintmarks, P/D.

Need some sackies? You can get them at any (working) Metrocard token vending machine in the NY City subway system. Besides, it looks cooler than that new, supposedly counterfeit-proof Washington bill.

Apologies. My post above should have said we struck “SBA” dollars in 1999

I say i like this new name. Hello, I am Travismo’s loyal nephew, Point Dexter. I am now using the baby backs as payment for drinks and candy bars in the hall during passing time in school. I even exchanged one for a dollar bill with my gym teacher on the conditipon that he would call them ‘Baby Back’s’ for all of eternity. He agreed. now i use them as payment for all the sorts, and spread the name wherever i buy stuff.
Travismo, you’ve got my backing!

Could they be any more cleverly disguised?

Glad to hear it my fine young friend. I didn’t know this thread was still active…

By the way, the Baby-Back link has changed to

http://www.geocities.com/babybackdollar.

We are giving away a baby-back/duct tape keychain. Visit for details!

Sorry, the link doesn’t like a period at the end. The real link is:

I’ve been calling them Indian Head Quarters. And offering to buy them from people for 50 cents each.

No takers yet. My co-workers are smarter than I’ve suspected for quite some time.

Well nawww.

I used to work in a small convenience/deli/liquor store in Las Vegas, and one of the things I enjoyed about working there was the fact that I could get my hands on all sorts of weird money…two dollar bills, Ike dollars, Kennedy halves, pre-1965 silver coins, etc. I very rarely gave these coins out as change. For one thing, I wanted them for MY stash, and for another thing, most people didn’t like receiving them as change.

The mint will have to quit making the dollar bill if it really wants the Sackie to be used, as others have said. As it is now, cashiers don’t have any real reason to give out Sackies as change.

What? We’ve revamped the one-dollar bill? You mean, like we have with the five, ten, twenty, fifty, and hundred?

I don’t believe it.

Go Point Dexter
I like the idea of going to the youth of America to properly nick name the new coin - the Baby-back! This is the second time that I have heard of youth joining the cause. You go Travisimo - you have my vote.
