Hey…we men love action movies but that doesn’t mean we don’t have a sensitive side too. Here’s my nomination for scenes where if I had tear ducts, that’s where the tears would flow (in quasi-order of sadness):
-Star Wars - Death of Obi Wan
-Top Gun - Goose is killed while ejecting
-Saving Private Ryan - Capt Miller gives his “earn this” speech on the bridge
-Gladiator - Death of Maximus
-Platoon - Elias is left behind to the Viet Kong
-Matrix Revolutions - The ending
-Terminator 2: Judgement Day - Ahnold learns why humans cry…but it is something he can never do.
-Reservoir Dogs - Mr White and Mr Orange share a touching moment before Mr Orange reveals his identity
-Raiders of the Lost Arc - The truck carrying Marion explodes
If not, then Veronica Guerins death & funeral in the film of the same name, I think its the song in the background, but it just gets to me anytime I watch it.
Star Trek III: As Kirk watches the Enterprise burn up in orbit (only slightly balanced by the knowledge that some damned Klingons got vaporized along with it).
Whoops. Just remembered that Moulin Rouge isn’t an action movie - just a hyper-active one. Instead, I’ll say X-Men - just after Magneto is defeated and Wolverine is holding Rogue.
The Presidents speech in “In the Begining” (paraphrase)
This is…this is the President. I’ve just been informed our midrange bases have fallen to the advance…We believe they intend to hit earth directly. We have continued to broadcast our surrender and a plea for mercy. They have not responded. We can only conclude we stand at the twilight of the human race. In order to buy more time for our transports to leave earth we ask for the support of every ship capable of fighting to take part in a last defense of our homeworld. We will not lie to you we do not believe survival is a possibility. We believe anyone that joins this battle will never come home. BUT for every ten mins we can delay their advance hundreds of humans can have a chance to escape to neutral territory. The human race must have a chance to continue elsewhere. No greater sacrifice has ever been asked of a people but I ask you now. To step forward one last time. One last battle to hold the line against the night. And…god…go with you all.
“Band of Brothers” sheesh name a time where they are fighting and there isn’t something getting in your eye’
“The Thing” two guys alone. Drinking as the last fires go out and the cold sets in.
“Conan” in the extended version there’s a moment when Conan seems to doubt himself and feel the pain of his loss. I can’t imagine why this was cut.
“Shawshank Redemption” three or four moments really.
“Terminator” when Reese dies and the strange sad feeling at the end.
My husband’s three movie-crying moments are:
Rudy - the end, when he gets to play
LOTR, ROTK - when everyone kneels down before the Hobbits
Gallipoli - the end, obviously
Augh. I hated that scene. What a dick! “You didn’t ask for us to make this sacrifice, in fact, you explicitly asked us not to make this sacrifice, but too bad! I’m giving you a sixty-year guilt trip over it anyway!”
Sorry, pet peeve. My own nomination:
The Iron Giant, when the Giant realizes he doesn’t have to be a weapon and instead sacrifices himself to stop the ICBM.
