The closest I’ve ever come in the brilliance stakes is my idea for refrigerator/microwave socks, ie you put them in the fridge and when you put on they cool your feet, or you heat them in the microwave to defrost your toes on a winters morning. But I suspect they have already been invented, I’ve just never seen them.
For sadly brilliant, I’ll nominate advanced military technology. The technical challenges can read like a detective story; the solutions are ever more cunning and ingenious; the sheer efficiency of the technology in actual use (I’m not talking about the contracting process!) can be breathtaking.
But it’s still just killing each other.
