Saglana Salchak: this girl has balls that clang.

This girl walked five miles in sub-zero weather through wolf-infested forests to get help. She was FOUR.

Sick grandmother, forest, wolves… and in the picture she’s wearing an actual red hood.

It’s a pretty amazing story. She’s an outstanding kid, for sure.

I could have done without the need to compare her to a male in order to complement her bravery. She’s a strong little girl; if anything she has steel ovaries.

I hope for her sake she never says, “Why, Mr. Putin! What big eyes you have… and your nose gets longer every time you speak…!”

Does the fact the forest has wolves in it do anything more than just make the story sound more dramatic? I know we immediately picture a pack of ravenous wolves stalking the girl, but how often to wolves attack humans without cause? Was she in any real danger from them?

I second this emotion. Clanging ovaries for sure.

Perhaps.

OTOH, she’s so adorable (and formidable) the wolves would cuddle up for a tummy rub and a game of fetch.

She’s a young girl. Do we really have to give her testicles?

I suspect she may not even have understood there may have been other options. I know several kids who did pretty incredible things at the same age because of that (one of them was me). Not taking anything from the kid, but I think the adults may be projecting like mad. Or I am, of course.

Hmm, not understanding just what other options there may have been. According to the article, there was no phone and no Internet at the cabin; the nearest neighbor was 5 miles away; the grandfather was blind and presumably not very mobile, and of course the grandmother was dying of a heart attack. Sending a carrier pigeon, perhaps?

flippancy aside, it’s very hard for me to see what other options there might have been in the situation.

Does this qualify her to do research in Winnipeg?

I’m sure she knew how dangerous the forest was. She would have had warnings about the cold and the wolves drummed into her from the very start.
