Salmonella and Peanuts

Ok from what I’ve read, Salmonella is monstly found in animals such as chickens and ignuanas. So, how does Salmonella end up in peanuts. You have several inches of dirt and a hard shell as obstacles at the farm. At what point would the bacteria enter or is it bad soil or unsanitary conditions further down the line?

A talking-head expert on the news said it was likely cross-contamination from eggs. But I’m not sure they know yet.

Cross-contamination. The friend of all bacteria everywhere.
