Well, this is neither mindless nor pointless, but it’s at least something I must share.

Kudos to our very own samclem for his appearance in William Safire’s On Language column in tomorrow’s New York Times magazine.

Here’s a secret to etymological sourcing: access www.americandialect.org, and its membership will go to work. Sam Clements came up with an 1892 use in The Times: ‘‘The next big thing to be done in the market,’’ wrote a financial reporter, ‘‘is the floating of the new Richmond Terminal securities.’’
