Greeley, in a book published in 1865, attibuted the supposed quote by Jackson as follows:

I can find no mention of this actual phrase being used before Greeley.
As an aside, Briggs was elected to Congress in 1831 as an anti-Jacksonian.
This is all just information. I’m firmly in the "White man screwed the Indians,"again camp.

OK. I couldn’t figure out at which point they would have been in railroad cars (and didn’t remember that passage from Remini’s book).
Actually, the treaty was amended in 1836, and that option was removed.
