I’m looking at going to San Antonio for a golf vacation in mid-February (using up a free Delta ticket). This will be a holiday to get me out of the frozen north for a couple of days (4-5, including 1 day to fly-in and 1/2 day to fly back). Some questions/information:
-
I like a good hotel. I like old and funky (but safe). I also like 3-4 star. I’ve seen ads for the Menger, any thoughts on that hotel or others downtown? I’d like to stay on the Riverwalk, but those rates look real high. If I’m going to a city I want to stay downtown.

I’m a hick from the sticks, so when I go to a big city, I don’t rent a car, I use public transport or taxis. I view driving in a big city with the same trepidation that most big city people would have if I asked them to backpack across Yellowstone Park with 50 pounds of bacon. It can be done, but it’s not a comfortable feeling. How’s the public transportation for getting around in San Antonio to the tourist sites?

My AAA guidebook says that San Antonio has 935,000 people and 4 public golf courses. What are my chances of getting tee times at Brackenridge? I live in a town with 40,000 people and 2 courses. It’s a little hard to comprehend the 935,000/4 ratio. Can I catch public transport to Brackenridge?

Any companies running kayaking trips in or around San Antonio? I’ll be coming from an area where I can be ice fishing the day before, so any time on open water would be as relaxing as a back massage.
Thanks
