San Antonio

I’m looking at going to San Antonio for a golf vacation in mid-February (using up a free Delta ticket). This will be a holiday to get me out of the frozen north for a couple of days (4-5, including 1 day to fly-in and 1/2 day to fly back). Some questions/information:

  1. I like a good hotel. I like old and funky (but safe). I also like 3-4 star. I’ve seen ads for the Menger, any thoughts on that hotel or others downtown? I’d like to stay on the Riverwalk, but those rates look real high. If I’m going to a city I want to stay downtown.

  2. I’m a hick from the sticks, so when I go to a big city, I don’t rent a car, I use public transport or taxis. I view driving in a big city with the same trepidation that most big city people would have if I asked them to backpack across Yellowstone Park with 50 pounds of bacon. It can be done, but it’s not a comfortable feeling. How’s the public transportation for getting around in San Antonio to the tourist sites?

  3. My AAA guidebook says that San Antonio has 935,000 people and 4 public golf courses. What are my chances of getting tee times at Brackenridge? I live in a town with 40,000 people and 2 courses. It’s a little hard to comprehend the 935,000/4 ratio. Can I catch public transport to Brackenridge?

  4. Any companies running kayaking trips in or around San Antonio? I’ll be coming from an area where I can be ice fishing the day before, so any time on open water would be as relaxing as a back massage.

Thanks

For open water boating you will want check out Canyon Lake. If you like plants, check out the San Antonio Botanical Center on Funston Street. It’s really nice and it’s inside of Loop 410 only a few miles north of downtown.
