Sandy Irvine’s foot has been found on Everest!

The 1924 Mallory-Irvine expedition is one of the mysteries of Everest — did they summit? They were last seen near the summit before weather closed in.

They never came back.

Mallory’s body was found in 1999, but it’s not clear from his location if he fell still going up, or on the way down.

And now a boot, with a foot and a sock has been found. The sock has a label: « A. C. Irvine ». It’s farther down the mountain than Mallory’s body.

DNA testing will likely be needed to confirm the foot really is Sandy Irvine’s remains, but the label on the sock, the type of boot, and the location are all pretty good indicators.

Still missing: their Kodak camera, which may have recoverable images, if ever found.

We discussed this in October in the Everest thread:

I was wondering where I left that.

Fascinating. Given its exposure to the weather for all these years, what are the odds that any images could be recovered from the camera’s film, if found?
