Sara by Bob Dylan

I had a Sara, though her name was Susan. She died. The greatest love song ever written. Number 2, I nominate, “She’s So Beautiful” by Joe Cocker. The first song is complex, the second utter simplicity.

It’s a great song. My only quibble is the “kelp” rhyme.

Well you are a picky motherfucker, aren’t you? So am I! I am the pickiest moterfucking picker of “groaner” lines in great songs.

For those that don’t know the song-

Now the beach is deserted except for some kelp
And a piece of an old ship that lies on the shore.
You always responded when I needed your help,
You gimme a map and a key to your door.

I can see it. The beach was not deserted except for some kelp, there was sand there and other things. “Kelp” “help” rhyme, even after you have pointed it out, I think it is fine

I think my edit window is over, I can’t see it. "kelp’ “help” who cares? It is the last 2 lines that hit one it the gut.

But I appreciate you having such high standards.

I think it’s “gave me,” not “gimme.” :money_mouth_face:

And to be also a picky MF, the name of the song is “You Are So Beuatiful”.

It is a wonderful song, but it inspires mixed emotions in me. It was done in one take with Sara watching. Dylan then went off back to his girlfriend.

I’ve always liked Sara. It’s one of my favorite Dylan songs. I’m surprised it hasn’t been covered by today’s artists.

Can someone invent a ∂igital Harmonica ƒilter?

I cringed when the song started with a bunch of mouth organ, and I was mentally trying to edit the song so I could get a four-measure intro without it.

I don’t get the love for it. I’m a big Dylan fan, but I think You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go or Love Minus Zero No Limit are both better love songs than Sara, which I think is far from the best song on Desire. I like it okay but it’s always been a meh for me.

@BobLibDem: yeah, big Meh for meh too. Well, actually, worse than meh.

Dylan was having some weird man/woman concepts at that time – probably related to his gaping Jesus theology. I try not to read about his personal life, but the lyrics to Oh Sister, smell super idiotic – and Sara is not exactly aroma free.

Sara, Sara
Sweet virgin angel, sweet love of my life
Sara, Sara
Radiant jewel, mystical wife

That’s not how I view women. Or anyone or anything.
