I’m going to bow out of this thread. As much as I enjoy a little verbal fisticuffs, I do regret the heat I helped to raise here, but only because it may have served the purpose of making some people more militantly committed to this particular form of “free speech.”
I don’t want to score any more “points,” not if it has that effect. And if I had interacted more kindly and patiently (which is hard for me; a character defect, no doubt), and it would have convinced even one person, that would have been worth it. I really mean that. Mentally retarded people have to take a lot of shit, and I hope I didn’t make it even a little worse, even if unintentionally.
Believe me, I don’t have such a high opinion of myself that I think my contribution on a message board will have any sort of significant influence. But one additional “I’ll show that guy” utterance out in the “real world” that makes someone somewhere feel bad, well, that’s one too many. I’ve already seen too many tears over such language.
A woman has started a petition against a local (Twin Cities) morning DJ named Dave Ryan because he said “I’m starving. I’m going to eat a couple of sloppy joes” on the air. This was apaprently taken as an egregious insult to real straving people around the world.

Or wrong person. Palin was making it up for political reasons. If she were truly offended, she would have gone harder after Rush who was very crude and insulting with his use.

Since Palin was offended, she shows that it is she who calls her baby retarded. I doubt anyone outside the family has enough information to make that claim. Im confused. Before there were airplanes, the word airplane never existed. So, since airplane was a ‘made up’ word as you say, means that airplane is a made up word??? And just to cover my bases from attack, i’ll go ahead and say that a slang word for Airplane is ‘plane’. Also, further base coverage, if you want to argue slang, then switch Airplane with Plane. ie… AfricanAmerican/Black=Airplane and Nigger=Plane.
