I was an avid Onion.com reader for quite some time. But, over time, a lot of their articles seem to have just gotten dry and so much more tasteless.
Then I was introduced to Satirewire.com. Admittedly, I don’t think they have a printed rag, and their site doesn’t have the volume of “information” that the Onion has. But it sure seems that their stories are of higher quality, IMHO.
Finally, recently, they were highlighted on Car Talk with their recent story on the CEO-nistas.
Or am I the only one who thinks SatireWire > Onion? Has the Onion been dethroned? Or is it just me?
I prefer Satirewire because it actually has some pertinence to reality. They have links in their articles citing what they’re mocking, whereas The Onion just tries to come up with something funny and only about 1/3 of it has any connection to actual news (even less to topical news).
Which isn’t to saythat the Onion isn’t funny; it’s just that Satirewire seems a lot more informed and intelligent. Humor is always better when it’s evident that some thought was put into it.
SatireWire is topical and most of the time funny, but I don’t think it’s as tight as the Onion.
Ferinstance, I thought the Hinjews article would be hysterical. But instead, after a good set-up, it lapsed into a boring, repetitive, monotonous stereotype. Other bits rely too heavily on a dialogue style instead, which seems out of place. And sometimes, IMO the author’s particular predjudices shine through a little too clearly making the piece seem harsh rather than funny.
The Onion is king. Overall, it is a far more robust/sophisticated paper. When I read SatireWire, I can’t help but feel the guy writing the articles is sitting their giggling to himself about how funny he is. The guys at The Onion probably do too, but it doesn’t come across in the writing. Besides, the horoscopes alone make The Onion superior in every way.
