Saul Bass does STAR WARS

First, the original:

Then the special edition:

There are some weird people out there.

The first one is awesome – I love the Carrie Fisher screen, especially.

The second is kind of funny, but the joke doesn’t really take off and go anywhere once you get it.

The original is quite clever. The “special edition” is very funny, but it seems to me like the original could already have been for the special edition- James Earl Jones is credited, the “New Hope” subtitle is there, and the Fox logo is the current one. (I’ll forgive them for misspelling “Starring,” but wasn’t Max Rebo in Return of the Jedi?)

The other thing that struck me is that the black space at the bottom of one screen could have some legal bits under it, since that’s the way it was always done during the old days that the sequence was trying to mimic. Here’s an example as Saul Bass might have done it during the time he worked and what it might look like at the time Star Wars actually came out. (At the time, the company name was actually punctuated “Twentieth Century-Fox,” but I forgot to put the hyphen in.)
