Say something that is true to a person in 1985 that will make you sound like a crazy person

Would many people recognize the name Donald Trump outside of the NYC metro area in 1985?

I lived in Fairfield county CT at the end of the eighties and he seemed like a local celebrity at that time.

I knew who Donald Trump was in 1985 and I lived in Arizona.

The only passenger car Ford Motor Company offers is the Mustang.

He’s mentioned in Die Hard with a Vengeance which came out just ten years later.

He had made national news by then. Trump Tower was already open in 1983. The Art of the Deal came out in 87.

Johnny Depp is one of the finest actors alive, and a great guy.

I was in business school on the other side of the world in 1985, and I’m sure that most of my classmates knew who trump was.

Certainly when Art of the Deal came out, it was widely read. The people who mocked and despised him then turned out to be largely good people. The ones who idolized them turned out to be venal assholes.

“Not only is Doctor Who on the air (after a 15-year hiatus) but it’s one of the most popular shows on both sides of the Atlantic!”

The earth is going to be hotter than average every year for the next 35 years and it’s just going to keep getting hotter and hotter.

I never heard of the Short-Fingered Vulgarian until reading Spy Magazine which started in 1986. And I had been online for several years before that and fairly well-read.

I’d say that outside NYC he was far from generally known.

Not that it matters, but this is my “leader in the clubhouse” as of right now.

“In 35 years, you’re gonna stop outside a bank before you walk in and put a mask over your nose and mouth. Because if you don’t, you might get dirty looks when you walk in”.

Given that gas was about 1.40 a gallon in 1982, and inflation was a real worry to everyone back then, this wouldn’t be all that hard to believe.

Someone driving in 1985 would remember the lines for gasoline in the late 1970s. “Stagflation” was also a recent memory. I think someone would find it harder to believe that fuel prices actually DROPPED - both in absolute numbers, and in adjusted-for-inflation figures, just a few years later.

I remember when gas hit 2.50 or 3.00 a gallon at one point years ago, and people were complaining, doing the math and noting that adjusted for inflation from 1.40 in 1981, it was still cheaper than in 1981.

“Why would you worry about Communists? Those clowns can’t accomplish anything without screwing up three other things in the process.”

Or for my mom and my buddy’s mom:

"Yeah, there’s this thing called “E-sports” where people get paid hundreds of thousands, if not millions to play video games. "

One of our highest earning entertainers is a guy named PewDiePie. He makes millions of dollars per year, taking video of himself playing video games. He has an audience of about 400 million people.

Some people ride around on motorized skateboards.

Dolly Parton is famous for her charity work.

The whole OJ Simpson thing. Qatar will host the World Cup. These two things aren’t necessarily related to each other.

This would blow everyone’s mind in 1985.

the fact of what was then maybe one or two school shootings would become an almost daily thing and as a whole were getting pretty numb to them

I don’t think whole-body x-ray machines have ever been used at airports. Does anyone know of an instance? In fact, I can’t think of any uses of whole body x-ray machines outside of a hospital (if there). Can anyone describe any uses?

I think a person in 1985 might believe that we have billion dollars lotteries in 2022, but it would sure sound like one of those parodies of future life that people come up with when imagining the future (like “people will take a pill to get all their food”, and “we’ll drive 200 mph on city streets”)
