But it still doesn’t detract from my larger point, which is that it’s absurd to take “Fighting Ignorance” as some kind of grandiose mission statement. It’s still just a tagline, like “Coke: It’s the real thing” or “McDonald’s: I’m loving it.”

Whether you call it grandiose is your call. Basically every Fortune 500 firm has a mission statement: most are nonsense. The one on the masthead is a good one. I understand Southwest Airlines has an effective mission statement as well.

Also, there is nothing mutually exclusive about using the phrase “fighting ignorance” as a snarky zinger and also taking it seriously as a call to action when some doofoid wanders onto the boards spouting something that we KNOW and can PROVE is ignorant bullshit.
