Saying "What's up" to San Francisco

I was going to hijack the Getting around in San Francisco thread but felt guilty. Reading that thread made me really long for San Francisco. I live in L.A. and don’t make it to the Bay area nearly as much as I like to.

My ex-girlfriend was German and when we went to San Francisco, she thought it was the greatest city she’s ever been to. That came as a surprise to me because she’s been to plenty of European cities, including Paris and Rome. But I had a hard time arguing with her, it’s my favorite city as well.

They were working on Union Square and the Embarcadero when I was there a few years ago. What are those areas like now? I guess I don’t have any real questions about the city. Just wanted to write it a love letter.

Union Square (the central park part) and the Embarcadero are much nicer now than even five years ago. The F Market streetcar line runs along the waterfront to Fishermans Wharf and there’s been a lot of improvements and landscaping around the Ferry Building.

Sadly, the homeless still badger tourists and natives alike and prices are heading off the scale - there’s a proposal to raise the cable car fare to $5 each way.
