"Sayonara", Miyoshi Umeki

The actress, who also starred in “Flower Drum Song” has passed away. Most of my generation remember her as Mrs. Livingston on “The Courtship of Eddie’s Father”

VCNJ~

Wonder if her death made the news in Japan. Or was she just an American star.

It dropped off the front page pretty quickly.

Wow. I play *FDS *in the store a lot, and it always gets a reaction. Pretty serious subject matter for a 50s Bway musical, and she of course is great in it. A course, she was a Japanese woman playing a Chinese woman, but I guess that imbalance was redressed in Memoirs of a Geisha, where most of the Japanese women were played by Chinese women. There’s progress for ya!

Namu Amida Butsu, RIP Umeki-san.

I didn’t know this about Sayounara:

Wow.

It made the Entertainment section of the Mainichi Daily News.
Japan’s only Oscar-winning actress Miyoshi Umeki, dies in US

It also got mentioned in the forums at fuckedgaijin.com

Good night, Mrs. Livingston.
