Scam (Internet and Otherwise) Omnibus Thread

The David Pakman show strings along a scam call.

Had yet another “USPS needs complete information to deliver your package” SMS messages, but I felt insulted. It came from a HOTMAIL address all nice and open! Really, I felt that they could have at least tried harder to scam me.

The lack of professionalism in these dirty, rotten filthy rat-bastards is the last straw!

I’ve had that sort of thing more recently as well. Kinda sad, in a way: it gives honest criminals a black eye.

I got a spate of invoices for odd sums, like $548.43, from women named “Vivian” and “Lee Ann” and the like for a few days. I guess the ladies got tired of sending these email invoices when they got no response at all from me.

Do you suppose some people just assume they’re legit and pay them? I suppose one in a thousand represents a good return.

Sometimes the scam is to get you to call a number printed on the invoice and complain about getting invoiced for something you didn’t order.

Then they’ll send you some fake communication from PayPal or whoever, saying that the charge will go through unless you cancel it but you need to upgrade to a business account to do so, which means you have to send them a sum of money ($350 is a common number) which will be refunded along with the canceled payment.

Or it may be some other line of bs that requires you to send them money in order to cancel the charge.

You’re probably right that some people just pay the invoice. That saves the scammer some work.

I just had to share this one, it’s too funny. It’s hard to believe that anyone would be stupid enough to fall for this, but I guess a bank card worth twenty million is tempting, especially if it comes from Jill Biden at mrsbidenfirstladyusa@gmail.com

Everyone knows that her real address is drbidenfirstladyusa@ gmail. com

Just spotted in my spam folder:

What is it with scammers using future dates?

UK here (I must have fallen off the potato truck on my way through Ireland from New York):

Flat (apartment) listing in Bristol. Everything looks good. This is last Saturday and we wanted to have several things to see in a day so we ask if we can see it Monday.

I go out for a run. When I come back there’s three emails:

  • I’m about to show this flat to someone in 20 minutes. I’ll let you know how it goes
  • (20 mins later). She liked it yet she only wanted to use it for commercial purposes so I refunded her viewing deposit (£500!)
  • You are scheduled for Monday at 11AM. I only want serious candidates so are you ready to send your “refundable” deposit for Monday? (£500!). I need to inform my legal advisor.

At the same time as I’m stunned at what I’m reading I am utterly let down that this was a total absolute scam. My wife even looked it up and somehow the UK Govt & the Tories passed legislation in 2019 that right off forbids “viewing deposits”.

Before I reply I google this “Courtney” with a fairly rare yet good sounding surname: One was a CEO, others seemed fine - none was a landlord or was connected to Bristol.

I tell this “person” that her request breaches a law that has been in place for over four years and in reply I get a “I am [sic] god-fearing person who does not want to take your hard earned money”

The kicker is, if you violate the “con-artist masquerading as a landlord” law you get a naughty “Please refrain from doing that” letter (if you can be identified). Further con-artisting might lead to a fine up to £3,000.

It’s been slow and uneventful lately but this is a twist. Or twisted.
I’m sure the plan is to ask for money for airfare, bribes, etc.

Dear Sir/Ma. ,

I’m Dr. Zainab Sowah, medical practitioner of Zainab Clinic hospital. I seek your cooperation and assistance for a little girl who has to be my late patient, Daughter. Mr. Phillip Anek who re-settle from the Netherlands to the Republic of Ghana with his wife before delivering their daughter here in my hospital Zainab Clinic hospital. Mr. Philip and his wife were involved in a vital auto accident five years ago on their way returning from Kumasi highway, which they couldn’t’ survive and past On. When the incident happened their daughter was at school that prevented her from the Incident, I have been their family Doctor for the past 10 years here in Ghana which made me tobe part of them.

In one statement we discover that the conditions of things here in Republic of Ghana Has not been suitable for the little girl so I seek your help to help me take their daughter out of Ghana for future sake and you will never regret this because the lawyer are ready to handover Mr. Phillip assets and funds, to you to raise their daughter and I shall time to time check on Her in your country on your request.

Dr. Miss is a strange honorific, even for a human trafficker.

Reading that one, I have this horrible nasty desire to send a panicked reply saying something along the lines of:

You blew my cov-ah! They’ll be here any minute and kill you ahlll!

Followed about details about how you’re being hunted by XYZ, and that the scammer should burn all their contact information, their device, and hide with no communications for a few weeks if they want to live.

Okay, it’s childish, but something about this one feels worse than usual. Flense them with your skillz.

Later. I have to set the hook first.

I get several spams a day - mostly “Your order has been shipped, but you gave us a bad address. Send us $5 and we will send it to the correct address” - or- “You have been reported for sending [large number] of viruses. Install anti-virus software by clicking here.” Of course, if I click, my anti-virus software warns me about going to that site.

My latest:

Walmart persons in power decided I’m a good bet. Seems there are gazillion Walmarts points I can use as my membership states or redeem at any Walmart for cash.

  1. What’s Walmart points?
  2. How, exactly did I become a member of this exclusive group?
  3. No, I don’t think the Walmart Corporation uses ‘Julie♥️@hotmail’ as an email address.

Dear Mr. Mosse,

I acknowledge your response with a welcome pleasure, thank you for your kind gesture over the life of the young little girl, she is now 7 years old and her name is (Julia Anek).

Well good in English speaking and healthy, her parents died five years ago which was 2017. She did not understand what happened to her parents because she was at a tender age then.

Just recently the family lawyer brought it to my notice to found her parental support out of Ghana for future sake.

Her photography is attached and if you have any questions do not hesitate to ask.

Thanks as I await your reply.

Dr. Sowah,
She looks very well cared for. I doubt I could do any better.

I got this one a few weeks ago. I give it a solid 9.5 for creativity (and humor).

Waves of blood flooding your penis tonight
As I write this email…
50 bottles of Viagra have been sold and Pfizer netted $3,470…
That’s pretty good money.
It’s kinda hard to give up that kind of money.
So we can all understand that when an actual CURE to Erectile Dysfunction comes along…they’d probably hide it.

Don’t judge them until you’ve been in their shoes. You’d probably do the same.
You’d probably try to get a site like this taken offline:

But you don’t have to be Big Pharma’s sucker anymore…
Because there is an island off the coast of Asia where ED is non existent.
And they all take the same exact herb. Every morning.
Their moaning wives are among the most satisfied women in the world.
They’re always wearing a big smile…

If you want to be able to go all night…and leave your wife in a puddle of sweat from all the pounding…
You need to see this

Damn it, don’t leave us hanging!

Seems I “could” and “qualify” for these wonderful prizes. The site is not AT&T. It’s about as bogus as you can imagine. I’m not a customer. I’ve got no products to review.

Another opportunity wasted, I’ll have a better chance in the lottery.
