Non-scam (sort of) call today - from a local area code.
Him: “This is so-and-so calling”.
Me: “Sorry, didn’t hear you”
Him: “This is so and so, Democratic candidate for…”.
Me: "You’re a scammer. " (and I hang up)
A couple minutes later, I got a text saying “Thomas, sorry you thought I was a scammer. This is Delegate so-and-so, who you have supported in the past and now I am running for X’s open seat. Do you have a moment to connect? I also wanted to share our ad with you”.
I looked the guy up, saw that he actually IS a candidate. I replied to the text saying “I am not Thomas and I do not live in your district. It’s not clear how you got this number but you have been reported as a spammer”.
I’ve been swamped with spam texts addressing me as Thomas lately; I’ve had this phone number for quite a few years, and I have to guess that, at some point, Thomas did have the number. I’ve also gotten direct phone calls asking for Thomas. Occasionally the texts mention Lesley.
TIL that the Supreme Court is located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW Phoenix, AZ, USA, Jenet Reno is the Chief Justice and Gloria Allred is the CEO of Wells Fargo.
Same here except people are looking for Antonio Jenkins, Jr. I mainly get automated voicemail for him.
This morning’s NPR Marketplace Tech report has some interesting things about scams. It includes some interviews with victims that give some insight into how you get caught by these things.
Does anyone know the contact info for notifying the 3 Credit bureaus to freeze any potential new credit applications in my name?
Already this today I have fended off two different scam/phishing attempts, one a purported credit app at Bank of America in Florida. It is impossible to contact BOA unless you already have an acct with them.
I just need to protect myself. Thanks, everybody.
