I have an HP Pavillion 7950. I recently edited the registy and took out all the startup programs that I felt I didnt need. Well stupid me didnt document which programs I took out, and now everytime I start my computer, SCANDISK starts and tells me that the computer wasnt shut down properly, when in fact the last shut down was fine.
Do any Pavillion users know what startup program I need to readd that could be the cause of this? And if not, does anybody know how to stop SCANDISK from running every damn time?!
If you don’t have a backup of your last good start (always have one before messing with registry) then just reinstall windows. This will replace whatever it was that you removed.
Startup editing is done from the Start Menu or Control Panel.
Registry editing is if you are absolutely certain you know what you are doing.
You can disable the scandisk after bad shutdown by going to
RUN in the start menu…type in MSCONFIG click ok…it will open to the general menu…click on advanced…click disable scandisk after bad shutdown.
If you made the changes to the registry fairly recently, and you are using win98 or newer, you can actually restore the registry to before you made the changes…
In win 98 you need to quit to dos and type in “scanreg /restore”
in Win Me you can go to the command line and type in “scanreg /restore”
In WinXP you simply run system restore (go to the run line, type in restore. double click on the rstrui icon) and choose a date the computer was working well.
Just for the future, there’s a very nice program call “Startup Cop” that will manage all the locations in windows where things can get started (there’s like seven). It will let you individually enable, disable, & delete things.
Go to ZDNet and download it by searching for “startcop” or go to…
