Scar removal options

I was working last night, and we had both Mederma and the Neosporin Scar Solution on ultramegaclearance. Like the markup was -300% clearance. So, here are my questions to you guys:

Does one of these work better than the other? Are there other (non-surgical) that would work better? I have had a scar on my face for years, and I figured that if I can get rid of it, or at least make it better for 20 bucks or whatever an entire course of either treatment would cost, why not do it?

According to my dermatologist, the only medical effect of scar reduction ointments/creams is to act as a lubricant while you rub the scar tissue. The rubbing may cause the scar tissue to break down and lessen the appearance of the scar but the products themselves are medically worthless. I specifically asked her about Mederma. This was a few years ago and AFAIK Neosporin wasn’t on the market yet.
