Scariest movie you've ever seen?

I finally watched it about two years ago. I didn’t find it scary. At all. That’s how it has been with most of the movies people cite as “scariest” because they watched them as kids and I wasn’t allowed to: Changeling, The Fog, Jaws, Jacob’s Ladder etc.

The reason I wasn’t allowed to watch horror movies is my parents made the mistake of taking me to see Poltergeist. I wasn’t quite five and had nightmares for a year.

Anyway…The Ring is kind of scary. And Boogeyman. And Event Horizon. Parts of Rose Red. Pandorum. Probably the scariest movie I’ve ever seen as an adult, however, is In The Mouth Of Madness.

Other than Sandra Bullock being ridiculously too old for the protagonist, I’m looking forward to the adaptation of Bird Box, because the novel is pretty damn scary. It’s unfortunate, however, that it wasn’t released before A Quiet Place, which is similar.

Seriously.

The Mist. Because of the ending.

It!_The_Terror_from_Beyond_Space

Black and white, made in 1958 sure. But terrifying to a boy foolish enough to stay up late and watch it one night. Still gives me shivers.

Yup. For '55, not bad for a creepy scene.
Especially when she sings along with him.

And for '60, quite menacingly sadistic.
(From the excellent Peeping Tom)

How about scary film images?

Right after the letter “G”, at @ 2:47 in this old David Lynch short.

Wasn’t quite expecting this in what I incorrectly expected would be a “non-scary” scene from The Ring. (please - not to be confused with the second line from Needles and Pins)

Heh, First Evil Face Appearance (@ 0:22) in The Exorcist

Couldn’t find adequate footage of Mrs. Allardyce and the million-watt-smile of the hearse driver from Burnt Offerings.

The Exorcist - story. I saw it the first time and it was great/frightening. Second time was with a new girlfriend who was a devout Catholic. I knew what was coming and it was humorous (actually) to me. She was squigged out. Never saw her again; found out she withdrew from school and returned home within two weeks of our movie date.

Alien - interesting dinner scene among others

Cape Fear-good old family stalking.

For disturbing, I’d go with SE7EN (SEVEN).

Have you ever seen one called Twisted Nerve with Hywel Bennett?

For me, the scariest movie is going to be a YouTube video of some hipster moron free-climbing a ten-thousand foot high tower and doing handstands and one-armed push-ups and the Lindy Hop at the top.

Poltergeist - I saw it when I was in first grade, after begging and pleading with my parents. They relented - fools.

I know for a fact they did not have sex in their bed at night for about a year, because I was there, every night, screaming down the hallway the entire way.

Right - for inducing a cardiac arrest in someone ridiculously vertiginous like myself, sure - I won’t argue with that.
Once, I stupidly youtubed “cliff falls”, saw maybe a bit of one video, then got the hell outa there, feeling not only whoozy but also skeevy for even going there.

Ah yes, Karen Black as Mrs Allardyce. " I’ve been waiting for you, Ben" There are lots of pictures of this guy . Funny how they lose their scariness when seen out of context.

The Fool Killer(1965), with Anthony Perkins. Same creepy vibe as Night Of The Hunter, but more violent.
