I love (lust after) Scarlett Johansson. I love (in a platonic way) Tom Waits. But her version of Falling Down does not bode well for the rest of the album. I hate it. Anyone more confident than I?

Not really. It sounded like a demo for one thing and like a dirge for another. Not that being dirgelike wouldn’t work, but it just sounds…bad.
She is getting married.
Why do I need to know this? Why was this the first story I saw when I turned on CNN today?

Eh, its alright.
I haven’t heard any tracks yet, but I absolutely adore Scarlett, I worship Tom Waits, and I’ve read some great reviews of the album so far. Apparently she’s going for a dark, ‘80s new wave synth-pop sound with his songs, as I’ve heard comparisons to Joy Division, My Bloody Valentine, and even the Cure. I know David Bowie had a hand in producing some of the tracks, so I still have faith. I wouldn’t expect her to recreate Waits’ songs note for note in his original styles, and I’d be disappointed if she tried. I’m just looking forward to buying the album in a few weeks, and hoping for the best.
I really liked that vid linked in the OP - One man’s “sounds like a demo” is another man’s “low-fi”, and her voice reminds me a tiny bit of the throaty bits of Sinead o’Connor circa I do not want…. There certainly seems to be some emotion there, at least. A bit indie-retro, and that’s not a bad thing. Got a slight Mazzy Star/Cowboy Junkies feel going - motels, Route 66, Americana, I think Tom might approve.
she sounds like she doesnt mean it.
I actually liked her cover better than Waits original.
But then, Wait’s boisterous drunkard vocals can be a little overbearing for me a lot of times. I liked that Scarlett’s version took it down a notch. I am however, extremely disappointed she’s not covering “Please Call me Baby”, or anything else from Wait’s “The Heart of Saturday Night” album for that matter.
