Maya, my American Pit Bull Terrier mix barks hello. 
What about the American Staffordshire Terrier, which is also known, in the US, as a Pitbull Terrier? Certainly the various laws against “pitbull terriers” that I’ve seen seek to ban both the breeds we’re mentioning, while selling the legislation as being targeted on one breed. Of course, it’s even more confusing when you consider the number of kennel clubs, and the differing breeds, as well as differing breed specs, that they follow.
The short answer, I believe, is that there is not a single breed of dog that can be categorically called the Pitbull Terrier. There are several that are saddled with that name, usually with some justification. And the American Pit Bull Terrier is certainly one of them. My comment was made with the same kind of pedantry that has me claiming that neither “boa constrictor” nor “rattlesnake” actually are the names of specific species of snakes. True, in a very narrow range, but a bit misleading, all the same, unless one’s audience has been informed of the definitions that are being used.

True of rattlesnakes, but Boa constrictor is indeed a particular species–in fact, the only animal I can think of offhand that is referred to in common speech by its full Latin binomial.
