/Shaking fist at BBC
Can us North Americans see it anywhere?
Everyone can watch it here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClNAiVhcIMA
Reminiscent of John Carpenter’s The Thing at all?
It will be written by Russell T. Davies so therefore it will probably be a bit lame.
Scary indeed! I’m hoping BBC America reruns Planet of the Dead at least once before they get around to showing this one (next summer, I’ll presume).
/Shakes fist at myself for missing PotD’s first (and so far only) broadcast
Eh, you’re not missing much fiddlesticks
POTD was the worst episode so far, the only good thing was part of the end. The female temporary assistant was a horrible character that you couldn’t warm to, also she was originally going to be a full time assistant for the new Doctor but the new doc said she was a “cow”, I think he meant her character though not the actress herself. So she was scrapped.
What do you think about this trailer?
Sorry to simulpost, but I missed the edit window. But…this is something I have not heard, nor seen mentioned anywhere else. Could you elaborate on this?
Yes I could. I quite liked her.
Are you sure about that? Where did that info come from? Everything I’ve ever read says she was always intended to be a one-off (as are all the companions in the specials until Christmas).
The actress did as decent a job as you can expect with a character who was basically Lara Croft with the serial numbers filed off.
I thought Lady Christina was a fine one-off (which she was intended to be) in an episode that was meant to be the Doctor’s last romp before things get really serious.
The scenario of monsters stalking the occupants of an isolated outpost is hardly unusual. It looks like the infected people are easily identifiable and at least one of the main characters is a woman, so there go two of the distinctive characteristics of that movie.
In a thread about trailers, it’s OK to discuss series spoilers that come from the trailers themselves, right?
The critical part of my brain says you can’t keep sending characters off with big emotional goodbyes if you’re going to bring them right back! At least wait a couple of years for their return from death, parallel worlds, whatever. Of course these could be figures in a dream, but it’s hard to imagine that not being hokey.
The fanboy part of my brain is squealing “they’re back!” But even it’s a little concerned about how they intend to handle Donna. If it turns out it’s OK for her to remember after all, that negates the most poignant moment in the series so far. (Sorry, Billie, it’s true. One of your sobbing scenes might have made it if there hadn’t been so many of them.) If it turns into a game of hiding the Doctor and the Tardis from Donna while she stomps around yakking into her cell phone, that’ll be pathetic. If it’s a cameo where she doesn’t participate in the plot, what’s the point? And if she remembers and her head explodes* – well, I just don’t think that would be a nice thing to have happen.
I will be looking forward to the summer of 2012 when it premiers on BBCA.
ETA: I hope they edit it enough to fit in more deoderant commercials and clip some basic plot development.
Oh gawd no! A woman who steals priceless historical artifacts from the public just for fun?
I echo other posters - what is your cite for this?
In this interview* with Michelle Ryan (Lady Christina), there is no mention of being considered as a full-time companion.
*apparently only available in the UK, sorry other Dopers. :o
For the whole Michelle Ryan as a companion thing -
It was along the lines that after she filmed her scenes there was talk of her coming back to be a full time companion for Matt Smith (new doc), Matt Smith (new doc) didn’t like this, quote cow comment and so the producers thought if Matt wasn’t comfortable then they wouldn’t bring her back.
I read it in a tv guide with an interview with one of the producers, it was back when POTD was on tv and I think it was an article with quotes from producers throughout said article. Yes, that’s what I can remember.
I just searched for it online but couldn’t find anything, which is frustrating but can assure you that I definitely read this shrug ah well.
Hey, BBCA has started showing some 1-hour shows in a 75 minute slot (Torchwood:Children of Earth, Dr Who, Top Gear…) so maybe we’ll get all all the show and the world’s supply of deoderant commercials.
Note that I pull this info from my TiVo, so if it is mere coincidence then I am revealed as a mere idiot.
Gawd no what? I’m not choosing her to be my running mate, I’m just saying she was a perfectly adequate character for a one-hour sci-fi action comedy with a bit of death and mayhem thrown in. As a regular companion she would have been no better than Adam, but - by all the best evidence available - she was never intended as such.
Besides, did you see that cup she stole? It wasn’t all that.
I really don’t remember hearing that. Everything I’ve read has said that Michelle Ryan was always considered as just a one-off character. Doing a Google search for the words “cow” “Michelle Ryan” & “Doctor Who” don’t bring up anything mentioning that quote except for this thread and I would think such a comment would have gotten around.
You are correct, sir! Being Human is also given a 75-minute slot, which is greatly appreciated by this Yank. Hopefully this is a permanent change.
