Wow. Mostly what I wanted to say, but with less profanity.
I’m sure the superintendent isn’t happy about the situation but it’s his job to deal with things the way they are not how he’d like them to be. Obviously a lot of bus drivers called in sick the last time this situation occurred and caused a problem. His job is to foresee similar problems and make the best possible plans for dealing with it.
Require doctor’s notes? People will still call in and then go out and get doctor’s notes. Fire some drivers who call in sick Monday? Will that make things better overall? The drivers who get fired won’t be back to work Tuesday and the drivers who are working the next time the Colts go to a Superbowl probably won’t really care about what happened in past years.
Just a guess but he may not be rescheduling all schools with the one hour delay. Some might be on the regular schedule or even running early. That way he can have some drivers run double routes for different schools.
Unfrickin believable. This country is going to hell in school bus.
Christ. The Super Bowl starts at 6 E.T. It’ll be over by 10 E.T. Can these people seriously not manage to get only medium shitfaced and get a whole six hours of sleep? Hell, I’m going to get drunk when I watch it and I’ll be sober by the time I go to bed (I’ve got a three-hour time zone advantage, but still.)
As a 49er fan, I assume you live on the West Coast. On the East Coast, the SuperBowl doesn’t start until 6:20 pm so it doesn’t end until ~10 pm. I would guess bus drivers have to be at work between 6 am and 6:30 am. Thats not a lot of time to unwind, sleep and get to work the next morning.
Anyways, I have a been a proponent of a Super Saturday Super Bowl rather than Sunday for a long time. My Country Club always has a big party that day, poker tournaments, dart tournaments etc. We have to wait until 1:30 pm to start the festivities, because the church crowd comes in and has Sunday Dinner.
Anyways, I have gone to work on Stupor Monday many times with a hangover.
i seriously doubt the bus drivers have a union… Yeah this is pretty silly… but i’ve know people to pull their kids outta school for the spring football game in college ball…
Plenty of school employees, including bus drivers, have unions. Unions are prioritizing organizing workers whose jobs can’t be sent overseas. Google school bus driver unionization to see many examples. And in fact Indianapolis is one example: http://www.afscme.org/16320.cfm
If they didn’t have a union, replacing the absent drivers with temps in this economy would be a no-brainer.
I host a SuperBowl party every year and have never missed the next day, even though I’m up cleaning til past midnight and have to be at work at 7am. However, I do wonder why they don’t move the game back a few hours so that the folks on the East Coast aren’t screwed by the late end time, or better yet, move it to Saturday, so that the majority of viewers can enjoy the game without having to worry about work on Monday.
Would you rather have these men waddle around without pants?
Huh. I actually live in the Midwest now, in the eastern time zone, and I didn’t even think of that. Even though I have bitched in the past about having to stay up until midnight to hear the end of Giants’ games.
NinjaChick:  Yeah, anyone who enjoys something you don’t is obviously an uncouth moron who deserves a “badge of shame”.
The Japanese do it that way, yet still, somehow its still more classy and interesting than American football.
I would point out that there is a difference between “sober enough to haul myself to my cubicle” and “sober enough to drive a schoolbus”.
That said, I think delaying school is pretty silly.
Doesn’t matter, though - the point is “sober enough to do my job.” It’s not like someone’s unaware in advance that they’ll be expected to drive a bus in the morning.
I agree, I am just responding to the people who are saying “so you drink until 10 or 11 and then go to bed, what’s the problem with being at work at 7?” That’s fine for most people, but I’d expect bus drivers to be more completely sober than most folks.
Lightweights. I can recall schools being CLOSED when the Redskin’s won the Superbowl in Washington, DC.
Hell, the principal gave us an excused absence if we wanted the day of the victory parade.
Is there some reason we can’t have Superbowl Saturday?
I don’t see the big deal, give the kids the day off and they can make it up in June.
Yeah I know it seems ridiculous on the face of things to “give in” to the drunken bus drivers, but c’mon we’re talking basic safety here.
You can’t sacrifice the saftey of anyone for the sake of making a point.
Here in Northern Virginia, most schools are giving kids the day off tomorrow even though the Redskins aren’t playing. Of course, that has more to do with this area’s incompetence at dealing with snow than its fever for football.
It’s like with airplanes: No smoking for 12 hours beforehand and no drinking within 100 feet of the bus.
