Hello!
I was wondering about this today. Why are school grades “A”, “B”, “C”, “D”, and then “F”? Why isn’t there an “E”, which will be worse than “D”? And where did this idea start, whose idea was it? Thanks

In South Africa, the following grades are used (where the pass mark is 40% for Higher Grade and 33.3% for Stadard Grade subjects):
AA - 90-100% (sometimes called A+)
A - 80-90%
B - 70-80%
C - 60-70%
D - 50-60%
E - 40-50%
F - 33.3-40%
FF - 30-33.3%
G - 20-30%
H - 0-20%
Hi, steely3000 and welcome to the SDMB.
I did a search for you and found that this has been discussed before. The most recent thread I found was this one.
Hope this helps.
Thanks KTK that thread was very helpful, and I’ll try doing a search next time myself.
