My HS psych teacher couldn’t answer this one, so i’ll throw it too you. Starting at college, and ending with having my own practice, what schooling, internship and residency would i have to do? And about how many years of each?
thnx

Undergrad - between 2 - 4 years.
Medical School - between 3 - 4 years.
Residency - about 5 years.
Fellowship - 1 - 2 years.
After that you could probably either join an existing practice or start your own. Or get on staff at a hospital or clinic.
I’m basing these numbers on the Canadian system, but the US one is very similar. There may be a year of internship in there as well.
A good friend of mine is finishing his psychiatry residence. A psychiatrist is an MD/DO who has undergone additional formal speciality training, including a residence. So, in general you need a 4 year undergraduate program of study, then about 4 years of formal medical school (including internship), and then another 2-4 years psychiatric residency and training.
You got plenty of time to prepare.
