It’s not sad – it’s pretty clearly a marketing ploy. They knew people would do this, and with the sensor it was easy to tell if it’s upside-down, so it was a cute app to write. Then the company itself spread the word, and got lots of free publicity in news reports.

The saddest bit, no matter if this is true or not, is that apple’s decision making is so capricious that this is completely plausible.

I get the distinct impression from quotations from the press release that this was not intended as serious censorship.

In a press release, TLA Systems’s James Thomson emphasized the company’s commitment to family-friendly calculators, stating, “We take our responsibility to protect innocent minds very seriously.” Many “calculator words” have already been defined and the good people at TLA plan on increasing this ban-list over time through software updates.

Some of the above comments have me a bit baffled. Are you people actually taking this seriously? I took it as an obvious tongue-in-cheek jab at the App Store’s ridiculous rejections and 17+ ratings for any app that has the remotest possibility of displaying potentially offensive content. That’s something that deserves to be mocked (and I say that even though I have a low tolerance for offensive content).

TLA Systems is to blame. They didn’t put a smiley face next to the “Censored!” sign. We at these blogs need a smiley face or the joke goes right over our heads.

I’m sorry, but the little “Censored!” block would make me MORE likely to spell offensive words on the calculator ap, just to entertain myself.

As soon as I saw that, I had to try it, since I already had PCalc Lite installed. I can confirm that the “Censored!” block is there.
