Sci fi / fantasy writers opinions of the songs they inspire

Science Fiction and Fantasy often inspires music, often by rock and metal bands but also new age music and (I suppose) hip hop. Different writers have had differing opinions about the music they inspire.

Iron Maiden made a song called “To Tame A Land” which was based on Dune, but Frank Herbert dissed the band and heavy metal music in general pretty bad.

On the other hand, Michael Moorcock enthusiastically supports rock band versions of his material, helping Blue Oyster Cult with the song “Black Blade” and even jamming with BOC main man Eric Bloom on occasion.

One thing that I want to know is whether or not JRR Tolkien was aware of Led Zeppelin and what they did with his books, and what he thought about it.

Also, have other writers gone against bands that made music based on their books?

Michael Moorcock also collaborated quite heavily with Hawkwind at one time.

Spider Robinson has been known to filk his own works, so I suppose he has a good opinion of them.

Kurt Vonnegut liked Ambrosia’s “Nice, Nice, Very Nice…”. Here’s the web pagewhere I read this.

And Mercedes Lackey has released several CDs of songs from and/or based on her books, and other artists have produced more with her blessing. She was a filker well before she got any of her stories published, I believe.

I’m an avid filk collector, and I’ve got them all. Fun stuff.

Was this thread inspired by Fuck me, Ray Bradbury?

And somehow this thread is missing the most obvious example - Fuck me, Ray Bradbury.

Okay, now that was funny.

And, BTW, Bradbury is on the record as loving the song.

In a reversal of the OP, Janis Ian is apparently a big SF fan and helped edit an anthology of original stories inspired by lyrics from her songs.

Janis Ian isn’t a fan; she a pro. I processed her SFWA application; she qualified because she had some short stories published in Mike Resnick anthologies.

Ooh, nice simul-post! (I just wish mine had made it in first.)

Okay. But I think most people would think of her primarily as a musician rather than as a SF writer.

In a similar vein, Leslie Fish’s filk song, “Carmen Miranda’s Ghost is Haunting Space Station Three” inspired a collection of short stories with the same name.

Not metal, new age, or hip hop, but does anyone know what Melissa Mathison (the writer of E.T.) thought of Neil Diamond’s “Heartlight”?

Searching Wikipedia for low hanging fruit: SERIOUSLY? Universal Studios made them pay 25 grand because they got the idea from watching E.T.? Is that for real?

I guess.

Ah, but did they make them CGI out the guitars in the video and replace them with cell phones?
