Sci-fi Movies that DON'T present a bleak vision of the future...

Things were pretty upbeat in The Fifth Element, barring evil alien plots to destroy Earth and that nasty black oily stuff. I wouldn’t mind an interplanetary cruise on that funky space-liner, or a Gautier-designed wardrobe.

Does Sleeper count even though it is a comedy? I’ll admit - I’d be an earlier purchaser of the orgasm-booth-for-the-home.

DCU: Nah, that’s a bland vision of the future.

Doesn’t that latest Friday the 13th have a civilization that allows dumb horny college students to go on field trips around the solar system and play with nanotechnology? I haven’t seen the film but I’ve read reviews, and it sounds like it may be somewhat upbeat (that is, when Jason isn’t trying to kill you).

You can’t make an interesting movie about a nice happy future. So it’d have to be a story that takes place in happy future, probably depicting nasty events that occur in an otherwise good society. I think Black Hole and Alien qualify. (It’s been a long time since I’ve seen either one though.) Fifth Element definitely qualifies.

Just Imagine (1930) depicts a giddy world where private airplanes have replaced cars in New York, Martian colonies are thriving, food comes in pill form and babies are dispnsed by vending machines.

Yes, the wondrous world of… 1980!

A really really crappy movie that fits the bill: Mission to Mars.
