I’m not a fan of peated Scotch but I’ll tolerate it. The scotch I found that I really like is Sia. Just finished off the last of my bottle the other day. I also have a bottle of Bruichladdich The Classic Laddie. This one has a secret. The nose has no hint of smoke but the first taste is peat forward. Then it drifts into a caramel and spice notes and finishes with hints of rye. Plus the teal colored bottle looks really cool in the liquor cabinet.
I drink it all night long, and die behind the wheel.
It’s aqua, not teal. Bruichladdich has different ranges with different levels of peat, so there’s something for everyone.
That said, we’re currently drinking (savoring) a Caol Ila distiller’s edition which was finished in a Moscatel cask.
Second on Monkey Shoulder being an inexpensive blend, yet a step up from Dewar’s or Cutty Sark. Try Bunnahabhain, the Islay scotch that’s got only a hint of peat. Try Scapa, from the Orkneys. But if you’re a must-have peat guy, I think all the usual suspects have been mentioned: all the Islays, Jura, and Talisker.
How about Connemara for an Irish Peater?
Years ago, when I lived in Chicago, I discovered a Scottish pub called The Duke of Perth, which had (and presumably still has) a huge selection of single malts. Which they sold in $5.00 sampler shots, so it was not terribly expensive to try three or four different styles. I’m not much of a drinker, but I had an enjoyable evening once, comparing Highland to Speyside to Islay malts.
I realize this doesn’t help Johnny L.A., who’s presumably on the west coast; but it might be profitable to see if a local tavern does something similar.
ETA: When life goes back to normal, of course…
This. We’ve tried many others but nothing beats it. https://www.totalwine.com/spirits/scotch/blended-scotch/macqueens-12-year-blended-scotch-whisky/p/151485750-1?glia=true&s=511&pid=cpc:Shopping+US+TEXA+ENG+SPART:::google:&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIwKLkyNXS6AIVNf_jBx2QwAXgEAQYASABEgL8tPD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
My favorite. I always have it in my house, and generally keep a backup bottle (although this thread just reminded me that I need to re-stock).
I also really enjoy Coal Ila.
For the Islay’s I’ve tried my order or preference for the standard 10/12 year offerings is:
Lagavulin
Coal Ila
Ardbeg
Bruichladdich Port Charlotte
Laphroaig
Bowmore
I agree- “Shackleton” is really good stuff, especially for a blended whisky.
How much did you pay? It runs about $30 a bottle around here, which is sort of mid-range for Scotch, albeit on the higher end for blends.
I know that the true scotch lovers look down on it, but I love Chivas Regal, particularly the 18 year old stuff.
