11 or 12 times?? Holy crap. You probably like it by now. “Hey, Sarge, this is nice, can I stay in here awhile?”
Reminds me of some cop buddies I used to have who joked that pepper spray came in handy whenever they stopped by Taco Bell and they forgot to give them hot sauce. Just give the taco a little squirt of pepper spray and you’re good to go.
No, I’m a whiny overweight 32 year old housewife. But thanks anyway.
I have a whole 'nother rant on the mollycoddling of children, if you want to hear it sometime. It sums up like this - if we make playgrounds out of blueberry jam and angel cake, the little dears don’t find out that when you fall, it hurts, and then you get up and you go back to playing. We’re raising them to be terrified of physical pain and ignorant of the amazing limits of their own bodies. This Is Bad.
While I can’t see the video in question (Youtube is now blocked at work), based on the descriptions, it sounds like the officer did the correct thing. A bite is an attack, period.
This is why I am trying to teach my children that the correct course in dealing with the cops is “Yes Sir, No sir” until it’s over. Then, if things have gone badly (Beaten, assualted, etc) we can deal with it after the fact.
The odds are that their polite behavior will get them a lot farther in dealing with the police than “I’m a citizen, my taxes pay your salary, you should leave alone… pig!”.
I really don’t think we have enough information, or at least I don’t, but it’s very tough to cuff someone who is resisting when you’re working solo. He should have had someone else along or called someone else in before effecting the arrest.
I am very curious as to why she was arrested. By the video clock on the police car it’s only about 7:30 at night.
Here’s a link to the video and full story in the Treasure Coast Palm, a local paper. According to the paper the arrest happened at 1:20 am. If I were an attorney I’d use the police video as evidence that the arrest happened prior to curfew. The Fort Pierce police department needs to figure out how to set their clocks.
Police officers routinely arrest people solo. There are only so many cops to go around, y’know.
Moreover, he had no way of knowing that this little girl would become violent upon arrest. What was he supposed to do, say to himself, “Hmmm… This tiny little girl might cause me physical harm. I had better call for backup before I confront this person”? If cops called for backup every time they had to arrest someone, that would seriously hinder their law enforcement efforts.
That’s ridiculous. Maybe that’s okay in the gynecologist’s office, but do we really need a generation of girl-brats growing up knowing male cops can’t bust them?
Is it SOP for officers to carefully place themselves and those they are arresting in front of their car’s camera? Or was this officer realizing this was a situation in which he could catch some flack if it was just he-said-she-said?
The cop punched her in the face right after she bit his hand. THEN he maced her. Watch the video again. He also was suplexing her arm. She resisted, but he was using more force than he should have, he should have called for backup.
What would backup do? What would a female cop do? Mace her first thing? “Sorry honey, we ain’t playing the crying game.” PSHHHHHHHHHH!" Gonna quiet down now? Wanna keep crying and resisting? Wanna bite me again? “PSHHHHHHH!” “There. Wanna go again?”
He should have called for backup before it got to the point of her biting him. He should not have punched her in the head as he did, and he should not have supplexed her arm either. If she has injuries to her shoulder joint because of him, he could find himself in trouble, because it would prove that he used too much force. It could be argued that she was combative due to the pain he was inflicting. Two people can restrain someone more quickly, and with less chance of hurting the offender, especially a child.
Watch the first 10 or 20 seconds of the video again. The officer turns has a little device of some sort that he puts on the hood of the car. It looks like he pushes a button on the device and looks into the car. At just that moment, the audio starts.
Clearly he has decided he needs to make a record of this arrest. And I don’t blame him one bit.
We’re such a rage-filled society at this point, I don’t think there’s anyone we can trust to do the hitting. Kids already get killed in the name of discipline and toughness. You want to take isolated incidents and make them totally unremarkable?
No, I want parental, media and blogosphere outrage to be proportional to the actual harm done. A hit to the face is not irreparable harm. Pepper spray is not irreparable harm (most of the time).
I do agree that the angle of her left shoulder looked painful. OTOH, I routinely move an arm into that exact position during a massage. I did not see a subluxation there (“supplexed” appears to be a martial art/wrestling term which I am unfamiliar with. Subluxation is moving a joint past the point of assisted range-of-motion and causing tears to the ligaments and/or dislocation of one or more bones). And again, I’m not sure what he should have done differently. It was her squirming that got her arm into that position, not a desire to cause pain or an abuse of his authority.
I haven’t yet heard any realistic suggestions for what he should have done differently. Even if he had called for (female? Really? Is this another of those men-are-monsters things?) backup, he’d still have had to subdue the girl until backup arrived, many more minutes later than what actually happened.
Look, I think curfew laws are stupid. I believe that cops abuse their authority far too often. But this girl totally lost it. If he had just let her go at that point, chances are far too good that she would have caused harm to herself or someone else, and it’s his job to prevent that whenever he can.
